Avalon Airport has opened a new $8 million, 24-hour freight processing facility.
Backed by Victorian government investment, the facility – as flagged in January – will be able to handle 100,000 tonnes of freight per year, and is equipped with “advanced scanning technology” that will speed up cargo processing.

“This new facility reflects the strong partnership between Melbourne Avalon Airport and the State Government in building the infrastructure that underpins Victoria’s trade and logistics future,” said Avalon Airport CEO Ari Suss.
According to the Victorian Government, the facility will process freight for major events such as the upcoming Lady Gaga concerts, MotoGP, Formula 1 and World Superbikes.
“The facility will help ease congestion on roads by reducing the number of trucks currently transporting freight between Melbourne Avalon Airport and Melbourne Tullamarine Airport and will benefit from better road connections when the West Gate Tunnel opens in late 2025,” the government said in a press release.
“The new freight processing centre is part of the Greater Avalon Employment Precinct and will bolster its role as an economic hub for the surrounding areas. The freight and logistics industry keeps Victoria moving and employs more than 260,000 Victorians.”
The new hub is also expected to cut the number of freight trucks moving cargo between Avalon and Melbourne in half, as more packages will be sent straight from Avalon.
“Avalon’s new facility provides Victoria with a second international freight gateway and will help ease pressure and congestion on our roads and Melbourne International Airport,” said Victorian Minister for Roads and Freight Melissa Horne.
10,000 tonnes of freight were processed at Avalon’s existing facilities in the 2023 financial year, and the airport says the new facility will bolster its role as a “strategic hub” for Victoria’s logistics sector.
“As part of the Greater Avalon Employment Precinct, the facility will create six new direct jobs and hundreds of flow-on opportunities in cargo handling, warehousing, and distribution,” Avalon Airport said in a press release in January.
“The precinct already hosts major distribution centres for businesses such as Australia Post, Cotton On, and Petstock, cementing Avalon’s role as an economic hub for the region.
“This new investment at Avalon Airport will further bolster its economic impact and enhance the efficiency of freight operations across the state.”
