Bankstown Airport has been given government approval for a new hangar development to support general aviation, flight training, and emergency services operations.
Part of Bankstown’s $60 million Aviation Hangar Project Major Development Plan (MDP), the project will see the construction of two new hangars and associated facilities, which will support up to 10 GA operations in the southwest Sydney region.

“The first-class hangar facilities will support critical general aviation operations, such as emergency and aeromedical services for metropolitan and regional areas,” said Tom Smith, CEO of airport operator Aeria Management Group (AMG).
“Bankstown Airport is a centre of excellence for aviation, innovation, economic growth and jobs. Thank you to Minister King, our owner Aware Super, our operators, partners and community for helping us gain approval for these high-quality facilities to support general aviation.”
In the MDP released in 2024, AMG said the project is “key to supporting and growing GA activities and maintaining the Airport as a centre of excellence for aviation”.
“Demand for GA activity at the Airport is forecast to grow between 3.2 per cent and 4.9 per cent per year up to 2030, which is in line with the national trend.
“The Airport is also well positioned to support the emerging Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) industry – including the development of net zero electric and hydrogenpowered aircraft – due to its urban location and proximity to major business and population centres across Sydney.
“The Airport is experiencing strong demand for aviation facilities, as evidenced by the existing and sustained full occupancy of all hangars at the Airport. This lack of vacancy hinders AMG’s ability to further invest in refurbishment or reconstruction of hangar facilities to extend their useful life, as current tenants require alternative premises from which to conduct business.
“The Project will provide opportunities for existing tenants to temporarily relocate their operations to allow upgrading of existing hangars, thereby ensuring business continuity.”
AMG in 2023 flagged a $130 million investment in two new major infrastructure projects at Bankstown, including $50 million for a new aviation hub with as many as nine new hangars, plus $80 million for a mixed-use precinct with retail and industrial facilities.
The airport operator said it has over the past decade invested more than $500 million across Bankstown and Camden Airports, including in “general aviation and key industries, such as manufacturing, distribution and the retail and community sectors.”
“AMG’s ongoing investments in general aviation include major upgrades to airport runways and taxiways and the Aviation Microsites Development Program, which is delivering multiple new or enhanced aircraft hangars,” it said.
