$700m RAAF Townsville infrastructure on track for Apache delivery

Khalil said: “RAAF Base Townsville is critical to our operations in the North and this $700 million transformation will help ensure Australia’s Defence estate is fit for purpose and ready to support operations in our region.”

These major infrastructure upgrades form part of the Albanese government’s investment in Australia’s northern bases, aligned with the 2024 National Defence Strategy. Current works include:

• Construction of new aircraft hangars and upgrades to existing facilities.
• Development of new working accommodation for personnel.
• Establishment of modern training and command facilities.
• A dedicated simulation hall to support Apache pilot training and the Army Aviation Training Centre’s Attack Helicopter Wing.
• Multi-storey car parks to better support staff working on base.

“We’re also committed to supporting the local industry and businesses who have been chosen to help deliver the program of works, which will create more than 275 new jobs for North Queenslanders,” Khalil added.

It is expected that the construction phase of the project will inject $275 million into the North Queensland economy, bringing significant investment in local construction trades, industries and supplies, with more than 275 jobs created at the peak of construction.

Assistant Minister for Northern Australia, Nita Green, echoed Khalil’s comments: “RAAF Base Townsville plays an important role in protecting our nation and our communities. There’s no clearer example of that than the role played by the Army’s 5th Aviation Regiment in the response to the most recent North Queensland floods.”

CPB Contractors is serving as the managing contractor for the works, partnering with Defence, with all project works scheduled to conclude in late 2028.
