Melbourne Airport has entered the next phase of development on its third runway project.

Community consultation is underway for the runway’s noise amelioration project and initial construction work is also about to begin. It comes after the federal government last year approved the long-awaited proposal.

The 3,000-metre runway, planned to open in 2031, will be built parallel to the existing north-south runway and 1.3 kilometres to the west. Its opening will allow for simultaneous take-offs and landings, which the airport said will increase capacity and reduce delays.

“Early and preliminary works will commence this month, with changed traffic conditions on Sunbury Road expected from late September as part of upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety,” the airport said in a press release.

“These works are in preparation for construction of the runway and will include road widening and the installation of a temporary intersection and traffic lights at the north of the airport between the Wildwood Road and Oaklands Road roundabouts. These works will take around 12 months to complete.”

Additionally, community engagement has commenced with residents in the Hume and Brimbank local government areas on how to address the issue of noise.

“The plan will be designed to reduce the impacts of aircraft noise for residents and sensitive public buildings in the communities closest to the airport through building improvements such as roof insulation, double-glazed windows and upgraded seals,” the airport said.

“Updated noise forecasts in 2026 will determine eligibility for individual properties, however, residents in the area are invited to provide input to help shape the project.”

According to Peter Lellyett, Melbourne Airport’s Third Runway Program executive director, the project is “critical to keep Victoria connected, ensuring we can meet future demand for travel and support the state’s economy”.

“We’re committed to working closely with our local communities to manage the impacts of the project, particularly when it comes to aircraft noise,” he said.

“Consultation for the Noise Amelioration Plan is a key step in making sure residents have access to information, can provide feedback and understand how we are planning for the future.

“The Sunbury Road changes are essential to keeping vehicles moving safely in and out of the airport when main construction works begin next year.”

The airport has also flagged a potential expansion of its international terminal with up to five new wide-body gates, as well as more room for shops, passenger waiting areas and airline lounges.
