Brisbane Airport has become the first in the world to complete a new IATA security assessment.
As part of the Security Management Systems (SeMS) certification process, IATA visited the airport on-site in June, and conducted a full audit of its approach to aviation security, with Brisbane being certified at the highest level of entry.

“The SeMS framework provides a structured approach to managing aviation security risks through proactive governance, continuous improvement, and industry best practices,” the airport said in a press release.
“The review focused on six core components: Corporate Governance, Resource Management, Threat and Risk Management, Quality Assurance and Control, Emergency and Incident Management, and Security Documentation.”
Gert-Jan de Graaff, the airport’s chief executive, hailed the result as evidence that “safety and security go hand in hand” at Brisbane.
“Being the first airport in the world to undergo this assessment reflects our commitment to leading the way in aviation security and delivering a safe, trusted experience for the 24 million passengers who travel through our airport every year,” he said.
“As Australia’s third busiest airport, and a rapidly growing destination ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it was important for us to benchmark ourselves against the highest international standards.”
Sheldon Hee, IATA’s regional vice president for Asia-Pacific, congratulated Brisbane on its certification and its four commendations in Executive Leadership Engagement, Cross-Functional Collaboration, Innovation and Continuous Improvement, and Alignment with Global Standards.
“SeMS is key to transforming global aviation security from a compliance mentality to one that is proactive in identifying and mitigating security risks and driving continuous improvements,” he said.
“This is a major transition that must involve the entire sector and we commend Brisbane Airport in leading the way by undertaking this rigorous assessment.”
The news comes as Brisbane continues with its $5 billion transformation program, which includes renovations to its domestic and international terminals, continued planning for a new terminal 3 precinct, aircraft parking and apron expansions, runway resurfacing, and a new aeromedical facility so medical repatriation and emergency services can be centralised at the airport.
In March, Brisbane became the first of Australia’s biggest three airports to see its domestic passenger numbers surpass pre-pandemic levels.
