Ground handling and logistics giant Swissport is expanding its footprint in Australia and opening new air cargo facilities in New Zealand.
The company, which provides ground services to 29 domestic and international airline customers at 18 airports across both countries, has opened a new location at Melbourne Airport and renovated its facility in Sydney, with plans to open air cargo operations in Auckland next month.

The Tullamarine facility covers an area of 9,366 square metres, including almost 5,000 square metres of warehouse floor space, and includes temperature-controlled storage systems for perishables and pharmaceuticals. The Sydney site has expanded to a total handling area of more than 4,500 square metres.
“The temperature-controlled air cargo centre is equipped to handle a wide range of products, including perishables, pharmaceuticals, mail, express shipments, and general cargo, ensuring seamless operations for diverse customer needs,” Swissport said in a statement.
“It is fully licensed to meet all customs, biosecurity, and screening requirements for Regulated Air Cargo Agents (RACA).
“Additionally, dedicated express delivery transport trucks, capable of loading airside, will enable swift delivery to freight forwarders within just 45 minutes of an aircraft’s arrival.”
In Auckland, Swissport will from late March offer air cargo services, including what it bills as “the airport’s largest and most advanced X-ray machine, featuring high-penetration, dual-view technology and detection alerts for explosives and narcotics”.
According to Joel Greig, general manager cargo for Australia and New Zealand at Swissport, the new and expanded sites will allow Swissport to add capacity and better tailor its offerings to its clients.
“Swissport is ready to support the rapidly growing air cargo demand in Australia and New Zealand, enabling businesses to thrive,” Greig said.
“Our new locations in Melbourne, Sydney and soon Auckland feature advanced temperature-controlled spaces, direct airside access, and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations.
“These capabilities empower our customers to deliver exceptional service quality across the supply chain.”
Swissport customers in Australia and New Zealand include Batik Air, Vietjet and LATAM. The company met with controversy when it won the bid for Qantas’ outsourced ground handling services in 2020, a decision which saw Qantas successfully sued in the High Court for the illegal sacking of around 1,700 ground workers.
