Jetstar has officially begun flights from Brisbane to Tokyo (Narita), a route moved from the Gold Coast.

The first JQ9 service took off from Brisbane on Tuesday aboard the 787-8 Dreamliner VH-VKG, returning as JQ10. Jetstar will initially operate five return services per week, ramping up to a daily service from December. It is the first of three new Asian routes from Brisbane to be announced over the coming months.

Jetstar is the first low-cost carrier to fly non-stop from Brisbane to Tokyo, adding 250,000 seats per year on the route. The airline will launch four weekly flights to Osaka (Kansai) and three to Seoul (Incheon) from February.

“Experience tells us that our great value fares will stimulate travel demand into Southeast Queensland from Tokyo, Osaka and Seoul,” said Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully.

“This influx of tourists will boost the state’s economy while also giving Queenslanders the chance to take off more and explore these incredibly beautiful and exciting cities.”

The new routes are supported by Brisbane Airport and Queensland’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund (AAIF). According to Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff, they will pour millions of dollars into tourism in south-east Queensland.

“We know cost of living is a huge issue right now so the injection of thousands of low-cost seats into the market is very welcome at a time when every dollar counts,” he said.

“The new flights to Tokyo, Osaka and Seoul are part of a major partnership between Jetstar and Brisbane Airport.”

Jetstar is also increasing its Brisbane–Auckland services to a daily schedule, and from February, will boost its Denpasar flights to 10 return services per week. The airline is additionally introducing the Airbus A321neo LR (NEO) on its Bali and Auckland routes.
