Sydney Airport sells data bundles for international flyers

written by Jake Nelson | May 4, 2023

Sydney Airport is exploring an additional revenue stream with the launch of a new product offering mobile data bundles to international travellers.

Dubbed tripsim, the product, developed in partnership with eSIM Go, offers bundles for more than 150 countries, with prices varying depending on the destination and data plan size. Customers are able to access this data using their own phone numbers without having to change SIM cards.

“We are always looking for ways to support our passengers in the terminals, but this is the first time we have offered a product to enhance their entire holiday experience,” said Mark Zaouk, Sydney Airport’s Executive General Manager of Commercial.

“Every year millions of Australians fly out of our T1 international terminal and we’re proud to deliver a new affordable product to help them stay connected while travelling overseas.”

The tripsim bundles are compatible with late-model phones that have eSIM compatibility such as Apple, Samsung, Google and some other Android phones. In addition, as they are available online, they can be purchased by customers departing Australia through other airports besides Sydney.

According to Sydney Airport Head of Commercial Analytics, Michael Brown, tripsim is an “innovative and cost-effective alternative” to international roaming, and offers access to high-quality tier-one mobile network providers around the world.

“International data roaming can be expensive, and our research shows many people search online for low-cost alternatives, which is why we’ve launched tripsim,” he said.

“It’s simple to install and offers an economical way for Australians to use their devices while overseas without the hassle of switching out SIM cards and phone numbers,” he said.
