A F/A-18F Super Hornet flew just 70 metres from Brisbane’s skyscrapers in September to prepare for Riverfire festival. RAAF aircraft appearing to ‘weave’ between Brisbane skyscrapers has become an annual event in the Queensland capital, with the videos regularly going viral globally. This perfect shot, caught by Corporal Brett Sherriff, shows the fighter flying past the 260m-tall 1 William Street tower. (Defence)

Locked On 387 | The best of aviation photography

This picture, taken inside a RAAF C-27J Spartan, shows a No. 100 Squadron Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII (front) and a Curtiss P-40N Kittyhawk. The pair were taking part in an air-to-air aerial display over Temora as part of Temora Aviation Museum’s September Showcase. No. 100 Squadron was originally formed in February 1942 and most notably carried out the RAAF’s first Beaufort operation resulting in the crucial sinking of a Japanese merchant vessel. It was disbanded in 1946 before being reformed last year to commemorate the Air Force’s centenary. Defence said the exercise provided No. 100 Squadron pilots with a rare opportunity to conduct formation flying with “unfamiliar, large operational aircraft”. Craig Murray shot this Air Affairs Learjet 35A, VH-LFA, climbing away from Runway 33 at RAAF Base Amberley. Air Affairs operates a fleet of 30 & 60 series Learjets to support ADF training as well as fulfilling other special mission roles including bushfire scanning. The business was purchased in October by British engineering firm QinetiQ.

A RAAF C-17A Globemaster drops essential supplies to Casey Station as part of the Australian Antarctic Program. The initiative sees the Australian government work with more than 150 research institutions globally to study the region, using science to unlock the secrets of the past as well as to predict future climate changes. Operation Southern Discovery is the Air Force’s contribution and takes place every year between November to March. In particular, the Globemaster is used for dropping heavy scientific equipment while ADF personnel also supply emergency medical help. (Flight Lieutenant David Jacks, Defence)
