Budget airline Thai AirAsia X is set to launch a new three-times-weekly service between Melbourne and Bangkok on 1 December.
The move means the Victorian airport will now boast 420 return services to Asian cities each week and help nudge it towards 60 per cent of pre-COVID international travellers.
The airport’s “chief of aviation”, Jim Parashos, said, “This new route will also drive tourism into Victoria and support a growing Thai international student market.
“Prior to the pandemic, Thailand was one of the state’s top 10 international student source markets and an important part of our economy.
“With confidence in travelling increasing and the introduction of new services such as this connection to Bangkok, we are really pleased with the outlook for international travel.”
Flights are on sale today, with one-way economy fares to Bangkok starting from $299 from Melbourne and $1,199 on a premium flatbed.
The larger AirAsia X group also includes AirAsia X and Indonesia AirAsia X, all of which operate a fleet of A330s. It also includes shorter haul carriers such as AirAsia, AirAsia India, Philippines AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, and Thai AirAsia.
The news significantly comes after AirAsia X said it would return to Australia and New Zealand from 1 November.
The Malaysian budget brand will fly three-times-weekly services to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and Auckland before increasing to a daily schedule by the first quarter of 2023.
AirAsia X’s Melbourne service will also mean a return to Tullamarine after earlier shifting its Victorian flights to Avalon in 2018, pre-pandemic.
