The global fight for aviation talent shows no signs of relenting after Emirates announced it would hold three more open days across Australia to recruit cabin crew to be based in Dubai.
The airline said successful candidates would enjoy a tax-free salary, free accommodation and excellent medical cover, with average starting pay of nearly 4,000 AUD per month.
Australia’s aviation industry has been grappling with a severe skill shortage spurred on by COVID-19 redundancies and early retirements. The lack of staff was thought to contribute to airport delays at Easter, which were later recognised as the worst since records began.
Emirates said its open days would take place in:
- Brisbane at the Sofitel Brisbane Central on 21 June
- Sydney at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth on 23 June
- Melbourne at Pullman on the Park Melbourne on 25 June.
The airline said those ultimately selected would be trained at its facility in Dubai, and further information on the selection process could be found on emirates.com/careers.
It comes days after Sydney Airport held a job fair in order to help fill thousands of vacancies across the Australian aviation industry.
“Fifteen thousand jobs were lost at the airport during the pandemic and even though everyone started recruiting heavily when borders looked like opening, we’ve still got 5,000 roles to fill,” said Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert.
“Our security contractor and ground handlers have been advertising jobs since December and have brought 500 staff on board since the start of the year but they have another 1,200 roles to go, which is incredibly challenging in this market.”
It comes after it was revealed that domestic flight delays in April were so bad almost 40 per cent of arrivals and departures were not on time.
The delays during the holidays attracted huge national media attention, with airports around the country seeing enormous snaking lines at check-in, bag drop and security.
At the same time, Sydney Airport was forced to cancel dozens of flights in the days leading up to Easter.
Australian Aviation also previously reported last month how a UK recruitment agency, claiming to operate on behalf of Alliance, was offering British pilots major perks to fly the carrier’s E190s, including serviced apartments and Qantas flights back home.
According to the email, up to 30 pilots — including 15 first officers and 15 captains — were being sought. First officers would be offered salaries of around $76,000, while the proposed salary for captains is still being negotiated, the email notes.
The employees would be also provided with accommodation, as well as concessional commuter benefits back to the UK on Qantas flights, on a “two months on, two weeks off” roster.
