Profile: C-27J Spartan

First delivered in 2015 under AIR 8000 Phase 2, the C-27J Spartan was given an unenviable task: to replace the RAAF’s adored fleet of Caribous. Operated by No. 35 Squadron from RAAF Base Amberly, the C-27J’s capabilities focus on regional peacetime operations, including search and rescue, aeromedical operations, and airlift tasks such as troop movement, cargo transport and airdrop operations.
The 30,500-kilogram Light Tactical Aircraft is designed to nestle into the sweet spot between the country’s smaller CH-47F Chinooks and larger C-130J Hercules and C-17A Globemaster IIIs. In July 2021, the C-27J saw its role redefined to greater encompass humanitarian disaster relief tasks, after again failing to receive Final Operational Capability (FOC) in 2019. The fleet is now anticipated to achieve FOC in 2022.
