Adapting to the year that wasn’t
How Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth airports innovated during their COVID hibernations
Strict border controls and quarantine measures have helped Australia contain and control COVID better than most countries. But as a result, our airports are among the hardest hit worldwide – with passenger numbers trending down 71 per cent.
Australian Airports Association (AAA) state-of-the-sector data paints a telling picture. A mere 47 million travellers passed through Australian airports in 2020, down from 164 million the year prior. Not unexpected given the global impact of COVID, but a challenging situation for airports to navigate given revenue is directly linked to travellers.
