NSW approves $2.6bn Western Sydney Airport industrial precinct

The NSW government has approved a new $2.6 billion industrial precinct next to the forthcoming Western Sydney Airport.

The first estates are due to open from the middle of next year and the project will create 5,200 jobs during construction and 17,000 upon completion.

The news comes weeks after the airport confirmed construction of a new rail link to St Marys station, consisting of six metro stations, will begin this year.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said, “We’re getting on with the job of building a new city around the airport well before the first plane takes off.”

The Mamre Road Precinct is one of 12 near the airport and will unlock 850 hectares of new industrial land.


It will also include 50 hectares of open space, featuring cycling and walking paths, that were previously inaccessible to the public. An additional 70 hectares of conservation land, including the Cumberland Plain Woodland, will also be protected from development.

It’s one of 24 projects included in a new initiative to fast-track planning assessments during the coronavirus pandemic.

“This land release will provide opportunities for international and domestic businesses to invest in Western Sydney, enabling major warehousing, logistics, manufacturing and circular economy operations to be established,” said Premier Berejiklian.

Earlier this month, Australian Aviation reported that a $11 billion rail link, named the ‘Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport’ line, will be six kilometres longer than initially envisaged and involve putting part of St Marys underground.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison then hailed the influence of the new national cabinet in speeding up the decision.

“This is how Australia makes it way back out of the COVID-19 crisis, infrastructure projects like this one,” he said.

    Wouldn’t a rail link from the Leppington line linking with the T8 Airport line be a better fit.

    Aren’t features like those above that are attractive to birds & other wildlife banned around airports by ICAO (especially greenfield ones) for safety reasons?

    I think it’s foolish that they are allowing housing estate developments right up to the border of the WSA property, as they are doing, & these ‘industrial’ estates that are actually mixed housing estates. There’s at least two massive housing estates under construction Then there’s the entire township of Luddenham, with shops & historic primary school that will be only 1km from the RUNWAY! Whoever heard of a government building an airport, especially a 24/7 airport, so close to where people live & young kids go to school??? At best it’s terribly irresponsible. Putting aside the welfare of those people, they’re setting this airport up to be inundated with noise complaints on a massive scale!

    We do not want or need this airport. When this pandemic hit it became obvious that Australia needs to be able to shut down – if it ever happens again it will be great to know that we can close our outside borders and be able to travel inside Australia safely – great if we used this space to put in fast rail instead of a freight airport. Living in the Blue Mountains I have loved since there have been no planes there are so many more birds -the Government has to realize that tourists don’t want to hear planes – they want to hear birds – so many things wrong with having an airport at Badgerys Creek I could write a book about it -NO WSA!!
