The 737 MAX’s operators want — and need — the aircraft back in the sky. ROB FINLAYSON

Bringing Back the Max

Getting the Boeing 737 MAX back in the air is a task that is nothing short of monumental. Any aircraft is complex to certify, but with the scrutiny of the entire world — and the entire world’s aviation safety regulators — on the United States’ Federal Aviation Administration as lead certifying authority, the stakes are unprecedented.

It will be a brave regulator that takes the first action to sign off on the MAX. Boeing’s ability to bring pressure on its domestic regulator to do so is diminished to a point unseen in recent history, while the pressure from international regulators — including via the report of the Joint Authorities Technical Review — for the FAA to get its house in order is very high indeed.
