Service with distinction
The Mirage story reaches its conclusion
In January 1963, the Minister for Air, James Fairbairn, announced that No75 Squadron would be the first unit to re-equip with the Mirage, replacing its Avon Sabres. The aircraft were allocated aircraft identification number A3, previously used by the RAAF’s Avro 504Ks and the later Wackett Trainers.
During July 1965, the Minister for Air, Peter Howson, advised that the squadron would be formed at RAAF Williamtown by August 1. Sufficient aircraft and trained pilots from the third pilot conversion course at 2 OCU enabled the squadron’s formation. Mirages had already been deployed to Darwin where they were tested in tropical conditions, and in the air defence radar environment, against RAAF bombers and RAF V-Bombers.
