It was the darling of the aviation industry. China’s HNA Group and its flagship Hainan Airlines had become China’s fourth largest carrier, launching flights across the globe and investing a staggering $A90 billion on everything from airlines, hotels and property to airline catering businesses and banks in a two-year spending spree.

It is no secret all that has come crashing down.
