Ben Cook is a pilot and the founder of the US-based Hangar 24 craft brewery. While studying and flying Ben and his friends used to ‘hang around with planes’ in Hangar 24 at Redlands Municipal Airport in California. Hangar 24 has also scored the elusive 5 star rating on Tripadvisor and its ‘Betty IPA’ is an all seasons beer, tastes superb and seems to have this amazing effect where the more you drink the better pilot you become – well the stories at least. Airfield Estate is a 45 minute flight WSW of Seattle, or a three-hour drive. The vineyard itself was founded in 1967 on a portion of the Miller family estate in Yakima that had been leased to the Olympia Air Transport Corporation, which constructed a flight school for hundreds of Army Air Corps pilots during World War 2. Three dirt runways were also formed, each of which was over a half mile long. At the end of the war the family patron H Lloyd Miller acquired all the buildings and improvements on the leased property for the princely sum of $1. Airfield Estate continues to restore and operate these historic buildings and produces a stable of award winning wines with cool aircraft names to boot!

So, you think a 17 hour non-stop hop to London is a long flight? On 9 June 1928 the Southern Cross, piloted by Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew landed on the grass of Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Aerodrome after an 84 hour flight. There is no record of the beer they celebrated with that night after breaking the world record crossing the Pacific, however the words “Smithy that’s Fokkin’ Good Beer” was heard well into the night! To celebrate the 90th Anniversary of this Alliance has released Smithy’s FGB. If you’re not sure what the acronym is, you need one.
