Re-regulation would curb new investment in airport infrastructure

Since 2002 the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has been responsible for monitoring the quality, prices, costs and profits relating to the provision of aeronautical and car parking services at our four largest international airports – Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The ACCC’s price monitoring role came about as part of the transition from the previous regulation of airport charges.

The ACCC publishes an annual Airport Monitoring Report on its price and quality of service monitoring. The ACCC has turned the release of this report into something of an annual media event. The Chair, Rod Sims, makes himself available for a number of embargoed media briefings so that on the day of the release of the report the ACCC’s views are widely and favourably reported.
