The 26th of May 2016 passed largely unheralded but in effect it marked a significant milestone in the transition of aircraft navigation in Australia. On that date some 180 of the legacy ground-based navigation aids, that had served the industry well for over 70 years, were decommissioned with the majority of aircraft now totally reliant on GPS for en route, terminal and approach navigation.
