Qantas to once again become an ETOPS world leader

The Qantas order for Boeing 787‑9s for its international operation and the aircraft’s capability to operate 330 minutes ETOPS opens up the possibility to fragment the South Pacific as never before and ultimately to open up flights across the South Pole.

While Qantas, through Trans Australian Airlines with its A300s and later with its own Boeing 767–200ERs was a pioneer with ETOPS, in more recent years it has not been at the forefront of pushing the envelope because of its predominantly four-engine ops across the Pacific.
