In July 1992, EVA Air started serving Los Angeles from its base in Taipei with its first Boeing 747-400 aircraft and launched Economy Deluxe. In May of the same year, Virgin Atlantic introduced Mid Class for full fare economy passengers on its jumbo jet fleet, in a peculiarly British case of history repeating the 1978 launch of Club Class, then also for full fare economy, by arch rival British Airways.
