Plans for a third runway highlights Melbourne Airport’s preliminary master plan, released on Monday for public comment.
The master plan covers planned development at the airport over the next two decades and details plans for a 3,000 metre runway parallel to the existing 09/27 east-west runway as well as an elevated loop road to built above the airport’s existing road network. The draft master plan also includes updated Australian Noise Exposure Forecasts (ANEF) contours which show the areas affected by aircraft noise.
Construction of the third runway is likely in the latter half of this decade. Notes a fact sheet released with the master plan on the third runway: “Following the approval of the Master Plan, Melbourne Airport will be required to seek further approval to build the runway through a Major Development Plan (MDP). This process is likely to commence around 2015/16, and will involve consultation with the community, government and other stakeholders. Subject to planning approval, construction will take several years.”
The airport says the existing runway configuration is likely to reach capacity “somewhere between 2018 and 2022”.
Said Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff: “The draft master plan highlights the economic and social importance of Melbourne Airport and how its future growth will continue to drive the Victorian economy, including more than doubling spending by interstate and international visitors from $8.5 billion to $18 billion by 2033; growing the number of jobs directly related to airport operations from more than 14,000 now to 23,000; and more than doubling the airport’s contribution to Gross State Product from $1.47 billion to $3.2 billion over the next couple of decades,”
The airport says it has plans for a $10 billion investment in airport infrastructure over the next 20 years.
