Benalla is in the race to host the 2016 World Gliding Championships.
Already home to the state’s gliding community and boasting one of the oldest aero clubs in the country, Benalla’s bid is being strongly supported by the Victorian government, which recently announced a $210,000 upgrade to airfield facilities there. In January Benalla hosted the 51st multiclass national competition.

The championships were last held in Australia in 2001 at Gawler in South Australia. The event has been held every two years since they began in Switzerland in 1948.
A decision on the world competition is expected to be made by the end of March this year.
