Ian Honnery remembers when – as a T-shirt he once saw at an airshow in the United States indelicately put it – flying was dangerous and sex was safe.

Times change, and no-one wants to make flying more dangerous, but the flip side of the coin is a dilemma widely acknowledged in an industry struggling to attract a new generation of enthusiasts and employees. These days, flying can seem about as sexy as a station wagon.
