Register Review
register and is seen here at Essendon on February 10 after changing its operator
to locally based Shortstop Jet Charter. (Gordon Reid)
Several new types are shown in the New Allocations this issue with by far the most interesting Precision Aerospace Productions’ Vought OS2U Kingfisher PSG and John Kempton’s Consolidated Vultee BT-13A Valiant JKV.
The Kingfisher was designed as a two-seat catapult launched observation floatplane although it could be fitted with a conventional tailwheel undercarriage for training. It was fitted with a very large central float below the fuselage and two, much smaller, stabilising floats attached to the wingtips. Its performance suffered due to the cumbersome central float and comparatively small 450hp (336kW) Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial engine, but it was used very successfully as an airborne observation platform with the US Navy.
The Kingfisher made its maiden flight on March 1 1938 and 1,519 were built for the US Navy, the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, the Soviet Navy and the RAAF. Several US Navy aircraft were later PSG. CASA is quoting the serial number of PSG as A48-7, but the aircraft is believed to be A48-2 which was at Whale World, Albany before being moved to Wangaratta.
Jerry Vultee formed the Airplane Development Corporation during 1932 after designing the V-1 single-engine, six-passenger airliner and American Airlines showing interest in the design. Unfortunately the airline chose the DC-3 for its twin engine safety over the eight-seat V-1A, a development of the V-1, and only 11 Vultees were delivered to American Airlines. The company went through several name and ownership changes between 1932 and 1939 when it became a wholly independent aircraft manufacturer. However, Jerry Vultee did not live to see his company gain independence as he and his wife died when the aircraft he was piloting crashed into Wilson Mountain, Arizona during a snowstorm.
Vultee Aircraft head-hunted Dick Palmer from Howard Hughes to replace Jerry Vultee as chief designer and he set to work on military designs to aid the war effort. Palmer designed the BT-13 and BT-15 Valiant training aircraft and oversaw most of the subsequent military designs before Consolidated and Vultee merged to become the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation – generally known as Convair.
John Kempton acquired his BT-13 Valiant from the USA and Dave Prossor has expanded upon its history, along with the Kingfisher’s, in his Warbirds column elsewhere this issue.
MJI and NPP are the first Bell 429 GlobalRanger helicopters in Australia with a further example registered in passed to the Cuban Navy and the type was not retired by the Cubans until 1959. Eighteen Kingfishers were delivered to the RAAF from a batch that were originally destined for the Dutch East Indies but were diverted to Australia in 1942. They were initially used as primary trainers for flying boat crews but they also equipped 107 Squadron and were used for convoy escort duties between 1943 and October 1945. A Kingfisher was also used in support of the 1947 Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition.
There are believed to be only eight Kingfisher survivors around the world, all in the US except for one in Cuba and New Zealand during January last year. The 429 has been developed by Bell in conjunction with Korean Aerospace Industries and Mitsui Bussan Aerospace Japan and is based on the 427, primarily for the emergency medical services industry. The 427’s cabin size was found to be inadequate for a stretcher, patient and medical staff so the 429 was developed with a larger cabin as well as supporting single-pilot IFR operations and a glass cockpit.
The GlobalRanger retains the engine and rotor drive system from the 427 but incorporates an advanced fourblade composite rotor design with swept tips and a modular airframe. The helicopter is powered by two 625shp (466kW) Pratt & Whitney Canada PW207D1 turboshaft engines. The 429 first flew on February 27 2007 but it was not until July 7 2009 that the first customer deliveries were made and at that time Bell had over 300 orders for the aircraft.
Raytheon Australia will provide three GlobalRangers to the RAN at Nowra to replace AgustaWestland AW109E Powers on a Retention and Motivation Initiative contract with 723 Squadron.
Helicopter crews will initially train on Aerospatiale Squirrels before progressing onto the GlobalRangers in preparation for the arrival of the MH-60Rs in 2014.
The final two new types shown in this month’s listing are the GippsAero GA10 XGY (see last issue for details) and Kevin Traeger’s Pazmany PL-9 Stork PZU. The Stork is a 3/4 scale version of the famous WW2 Fiesler F-156 Storch operated by the Luftwaffe. The original Storch was a two-seat, high-wing, single-engine aircraft with a takeoff roll of only 43m and a landing roll of just 12m with a 10km/h headwind.
Ladislao Pazmany designed the Stork for amateur builders using modern materials and production processes but with the classic looks and handling characteristics of the original Storch. The welded chrome alloy steel tube fuselage is fabric covered while the wings arefinished with sheet aluminium.
PZU has taken 11 years to complete, is at the taxiing stage and is expected to have its maiden flight during the life of this issue. It is fitted with a 160hp (120kW) 2. 5 litre Subaru EJ25 engine and is painted in green, grey and blue camouflage with German crosses and swastikas.
Unfortunately, included in the Deletions section this month are two aircraft involved in accidents that claimed the lives of well known aviation identities. Tiger Moth GVA crashed at Maryborough, Victoria taking the life of John Fisher, and Extra NIS was involved in an accident at Temora during January 2009 ending the life of Tom Moon. John Fisher was a dedicated De Havilland enthusiast and owned several of the type in his Old Aviators Flying Museum at Maryborough. Tom Moon was one of the most accomplished aerobatic pilots in Australia and many will remember his immaculate displays at airshows around Australia. His Extra was registered NIS in order to read SIN while inverted.
Several aircraft have been withdrawn from use never to fly again, including Zlin Z‑242L ZLI which was with the Oxford Aviation Academy at Moorabbin but has not flown for a number of years due to exceeded spar life. It has now gone to the Sale Technical College as a ground instruction airframe.
Airliner exports include the last Virgin Embraer E-170, ZHF, which has joined its sisterships in the US and the fifth Qantas Boeing 767-300ER, OGE, destined for freighter conversion. Swearingen Metro 23 KEX is the second of four Pel-Air Metros that will go the Bearskin Airlines in Canada.
Eurocopter Squirrel OUF and Bell 407 VDV are now in PNG, PZL Dromader NID is on its way to South Africa and Aerospatiale Squirrel WHW and elderly Auster Autocrat WMM have been exported to New Zealand.
Catching up on some exports whose subsequent identities have not been reported in this column before, North American Trojan XVT, which went to South Africa during April 2011, is now flying as ZU-FOY with Pacific Coast Investments at Ferndale.
Bell 412HP MHQ, which was exported to Indonesia in January last year, is now known to have become PK-FUG. Unfortunately the big Bell crashed and was written off at Mount Dua Saudara on August 3.
A recent survey of the Philippines register has revealed the new identities of three Cessna 152s which were sold to Omni Aviation Corporation at Clark Field during March 2011. AQF, BYQ and BSF are now marked as RP-C3602, RP-C3603 and RP-C3604 respectively.
Five Hughes 369HS helicopters that were shown in the July 2010 Register Update as “Revoked by CASA” have now turned up in the Philippines with VLM now RP-C5200, ONX RP-C5201, FHL RPC5202, KFZ RP-C5203 and HUN now marked as RP-C5204, all with Venjo Trading Services at Manila.
