Two new types are shown in the New Allocations this month. Norman Edmunds’ Melendez Firstar NMZ is a two-seat, low wing, tailwheel, amateur built aircraft of allwood construction. It features a cantilevered, tapered wing and tail surfaces and was designed by Bernardo C Melendez Jr of Houston, Texas. As far as it is known NMZ is the first of its type to be registered anywhere in the world, with even the designer’s prototype not having flown yet.
Shane Clee’s Pitts Special NQR is listed as an S-1X model, although the ‘X’ part of the model is not a Pitts official designation but a generic term used for modified aircraft.
Shane obtained the aircraft from the US more than three years ago in the hope of flying it within three weeks.
Unfortunately when it was unpacked from the container it was found to be in a very poor state. The more Shane looked the more he found what needed to be fixed, and by the time he had removed all the components that needed replacing or refurbishing there was only the fuselage frame, the engine and some of the fabric covering left. He then began the long process of rebuilding the Pitts from the ground up, and what started as a three week re-assembly job became a three year rebuild.
As the Pitts took shape many modifications were built into the aircraft, and as a result it went from being an S-1T to an S-1X complete with a personalised serial number derived from Shane’s initials.
S-2 wings and canopy have been fitted and all the sprucefuselage stringers have been replaced with aluminium. The 200hp (150kW) Lycoming powered Pitts is very close to flying again and is finished in gloss black with an orange and yellow ‘sunburst’ colour scheme on the upper wing.
GAF Nomad XGZ has been acquired by GippsAero to become the flying development platform for the new GippsAero GA18. New engines and propellers along with aerodynamic improvements and other system upgrades will be tested on the aircraft before the GA18 goes into production.
XGZ started life as the 34th production N24 Nomad and was delivered to the Department of Health – Northern Territory Medical Service during late 1977. During 1983 it was upgraded to an N24A model and three years later Skywest added it to its fleet based in Perth. Skywest became Pearl Aviation during 1996 and one year later the Nomad crossed the Tasman to join Air Safaris at Lake Tekapo, New Zealand.
Air Safaris was very happy with the much maligned Nomad, and at one stage had around seven in its fleet operating scenic flights around Mount Cook, Milford Sound and the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. It still has two Nomads on its books but has been gradually replacing them with GippsAero Airvans.
Over 170 Nomads were built, with only XGZ and one other still flying in Australia and the two Air Safaris examples and one on parachute operations in New Zealand. GippsAero still supports operators of Nomads worldwide and intends to give the type a new lease of life with the GA18.
Aviation Management Services at Moorabbin has added another three pre-loved Piper Warriors to its fleet, which now consists of seven Warriors, an Archer, Arrow and Beech Duchess. The three latest Warriors have been sourced from the University of North Dakota Aerospace Foundation at Grand Forks, North Dakota, as were two other Warriors and the Arrow which joined its fleet late last year.
As an indication of the size of some of the pilot training schools in the US, the University of North Dakota operates 130 aircraft, including 12 helicopters, from its main base at Grand Forks and its satellite campuses at Phoenix, Arizona; Spokane, Wisconsin; and Crookston, Maine. The aircraft range from Cessna 172s for basic training, Piper Arrows for advanced, including retractable undercarriage training, Piper Seminoles for twin endorsements, and King Airs for turbine training. It also has two Super Decathlons for aerobatics and a Cub Crafters Top Cub on floats for water landings.
Basic helicopter training is on Schweizer 300s and turbine time on Bell JetRangers.
The Schofields Flying Club has also taken advantage of the University’s sale of its Warriors by acquiring two, ZFX and ZFY, to add to its own fleet.
Based at Bankstown since the closure of Schofields airfield in the 1990s, the flying club has eight Warriors, two Archers, a Cessna 152 and a Piper Arrow on line.
Heliflite has registered another two Robinson R66 five-seat, Rolls-Royce turbine powered helicopters – OBN and TOO – making a total of six on the local register. With two in New Zealand and a further two known to be in Australia but not yet registered, the R66 is shaping up to be more popular than the earlier R22 and R44 models.
Qantas has added two more Airbus A380s to its fleet, OQK and OQL being the 11th and 12th of the type in the Qantas fleet, and Jetstar has received another Airbus A320, bringing its total to 45 of the type. Saab 340Bs ZJS and ZXS are now back in the Regional Express fleet after almost two years leased in Thailand, firstly with Nok Air and later with Happy Air. The return of the two Saabs means that Regional Express now has 47 340Bs on line, as well as four 340As operating freight flights from Brisbane with Pelair.
Air Tractor FFU is one of two Aircraft Returning to the Register this issue. The specially equipped AT-802A is leased from Conair in Canada for the firefighting season and is on its third trip to Australia. Conair operates a feet of 49 fixed wing aircraft from its Abbotsford base in British Colombia, including converted Grumman Tracker, Convair 580, Douglas DC-6 and Lockheed Electra firebombers. It also has Canadair CL-215 dedicated firebombers and Air Tractors, both on floats and wheels.
The second aircraft coming back onto the register is Pavel Kricfalusi’s Kavanagh balloon HTR after being cancelled only two months before.
Twenty-eight aircraft are shown in the Deletions section this issue – approximately onethird the number of additions in the new allocation listing.
When you take into account the four aircraft transferring to the RA-Aus register and two machines that have been withdrawn from use at their owner’s request, which may end up back on the register, the numbers show that the Australian aviation industry is in a very stable state indeed – despite the nay-sayers. The number of aircraft on the local registers have increased each and every month for more than 20 years.
The three Bristow Helicopters Sikorsky S-76s, BHI, BHQ and BZW, were only notified to CASA as being ‘sold’, so we assume that they have been sold overseas, although only time will tell where they will end up.
Four aircraft have been exported to the US, including GippsAero Airvan BWC which is now with Geoloc South at Norton Shores, Michigan, flying as N894SC, and Robinson R44 MHM which has gone back to Robinson Helicopters for refurbishment. Qantas Boeing 767 OGF (see Traffic this issue) is now N363CM with Cargo Aircraft Management at Orange, Orlando, and will join the queue for freighter conversion along with OGA, OGB, OGC and OGD. Virgin Boeing 737 VBD has been returned to ILFC and is now N331LF4.
Kawasaki BK117 RLI and Ryan ST-M2 STM have gone to New Zealand with the former now flying as ZK-IMN with Garden City Helicopters at Christchurch. The only other export is Aerospatiale Squirrel WOA which is now in Korea marked as HL9196.
Five aircraft are noted as being involved in accidents, including Thorp T-18 IFM and Cessna 206 UAW which both crashed in Western Australia, and Robinson R44 HBA, which was destroyed near Macarthur River Mine on a return flight from Cape Crawford in the Northern Territory. During cruise the pilot noticed that the oil pressure had reduced to zero and the engine fire warning light had illuminated.
After a precautionary landing a fire developed in the engine area which then consumed the helicopter. Thankfully, the successful forced landing meant that nobody was hurt.
Finally, David Barwick has recently acquired his Jabiru, and to make flying in and out of Canberra easier he changed a few things and put it on the CASA register as IMZ. However, the exercise has become more complicated than first thought and he has decided to return it to the RA-Aus register as 24-5107 – hence the aircraft being shown in both the new allocation and deletions sections.
