• Initial air strikes against 31 targets were launched on October 7 in Operation Enduring Freedom against al-Qaeda terrorist training camps and Taliban military positions in Afghanistan. Forces employed in the first missions were B-52s and B-1Bs operating from Diego Garcia, USN aircraft from the USS Enterprise and Carl Vinson, six B-2As from Whiteman AFB, Missouri, which performed the longest ever bombing raids, and cruise missiles launched from USN ships and submarines and RN submarines.
