Register Review

This month’s New Allocation section includes two new subtypes as well as several interesting lesser known types.

MBU is the first Flight Design MC on the CASA register, although there are a further two MCs flying on the RA-Aus register. Flight Design is a German company which began building hang gliders during the 1980s. In 1997 it began production of its first powered aircraft in the form of an all-composite, high wing, two-seater called the CT. Two years later the CT2K became available, and soon after the short wing version was released and named the CTSW. During 2006 the CTLS was introduced, which conformed to the European and FAA Light Sport Aircraft regulations, and in 2008 the all-aluminium MC (metal concept) model became available, incorporating a welded steel tube safety cage around the cockpit area.

Flight Design is presently working on a four-seat version to be named the C4, and while the design work and most of the component production for all models is performed in the company’s facility at Leinfelden- Echterdignen, some production and all assembly work is now done in the Ukraine to lower production costs.

The Flight Design MC is powered by the venerable Rotax 912 four cylinder, four stroke, liquid cooled engine driving a composite two blade propeller, and it is fitted with a BRS1350 HS ballistic parachute recovery system. It also boasts a steerable nose wheel and hydraulic brakes. Wing located fuel tanks carry 100 litres, giving a claimed maximum range of 500nm.

Sports Aircraft Australia at Kyneton, Victoria, and Sports Aircraft New Zealand at Wellsford are the local agents for all Flight Design models and have imported almost 40 aircraft so far. MBU has been delivered to MAF International Asia Pacific at Cairns where it will be used for pilot training.

EQN and EQO are the first two upgraded versions of the Seabird Aviation SB7 Seeker.

Don Adams founded Seabird Aviation during 1983 to produce a fixed wing airborne observation platform that could be used for a variety of functions at one-third the cost of operating a helicopter.

The result was the Sentinel and then the Seeker. Being a niche product, sales have been relatively slow with the two latest aircraft being the 16th and 17th examples. However, design improvements and penetration into world markets have seen aircraft being delivered to the US, South Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East in recent years.

The two new Seekers will be delivered from the company’s modern production facility at Hervey Bay to Queensland electricity provider Ergon Energy, and will be used to survey its network of almost 150,000km overhead powerlines.

Ergon staff will be able to build spatial models from the data obtained to prioritise asset management and potentially save millions of dollars in operational efficiencies.

The two new 360A3 models incorporate some structural upgrades as well as a more powerful Lycoming IO-390-A1B6 engine. The MTOW has been increased, and a secondary alternator has been fi tted to provide an independent power supply to the installed sensor suites. Th e aircraft are fully IFR certifi ed and have been fi tted with a full glass cockpit including a Garmin G500 electronic fl ight display and a Trilogy ESI-2000 standby unit.

A GTRS-330ES Transponder, Garmin GMA-347 audio panel, STEC-55X autopilot, GSR-56 satellite based weather system and a GTS-800 traffi c advisory system complete the setup. Engine management is provided by an Auracle CRM-2100 digital system, and an IndigoSat One takes care of aircraft tracking.

Externally, all the lighting has been replaced by high effi ciency LED products.

Hawker Siddeley 748 DQY is one of more than a dozen of the type that the IAP Group has been involved with scrapping over the last decade, including the ex RAAF machines. DQY fi rst came to Australia from Madagascar in 2001, then registered 5R-MJB.

Th ree years later it was sold to Zoom Airways, Bangladesh, and became S2-ADL.

Zoom operated cargo services throughout Bangladesh and Asia using the 748 along with a Lockheed TriStar, but IAP has now re-acquired the elderly turboprop, which may end its days as scrap metal without even returning to Australia.

New airliners include a ninth Dash 8 for Skippers Aviation and two more Fokker 100s for Alliance Airlines. Th e Dash 8, XKI, brings Skippers’ fl eet to 25 including four Series 100 and fi ve Series 300 Dash 8s, six Embraer Brasilias, fi ve Metro 23s and fi ve Cessna 441 Conquests. Th e Alliance fl eet, meanwhile, now stands at 16 Fokker 100s and six Fokker 50s (with two Fokker 70s soon to join the register – see Newsdesk).

Th e two latest Fokker 100s are the last of eight ex German aircraft that Alliance obtained last year. All eight aircraft were not expected to come to Australia, but with the local boom in FIFO mining contracts Alliance has obviously found work for them all.

Th e Piper PA-46 Malibu has not been a big seller in this part of the world, but with a strong Australian dollar and a wish for local operators to upgrade to more up-market aircraft, two pre-owned Malibus have been added to the register during the past couple of months.

Th e Malibu is a single engine, pressurised, six-seater which fi rst fl ew on November 30 1979, and was designed to compete in the corporate market with the pressurised Cessna 210 Centurion. Th e prototype Malibu 300T was quickly replaced by the 310P model powered by a 310hp (232kW) Continental TSIO-520 engine and incorporated a rear air-stair door. Th e Malibu Mirage 350P was introduced during 1987 and featured a 350hp (260kW) Lycoming engine, a new electrical system and improved cabin trim. A turboprop version, fi tted with a 500shp (373kW) PT6A, was released in 1997. Given the name Malibu Meridian 500TP, it incorporated a lengthened wing, larger tail and stronger undercarriage. In October 2007, Piper announced an un-pressurised version of the Malibu designated PA-46R-350T Malibu Matrix and fi tted with a 350hp (260kW) turbocharged powerplant, built-in oxygen system, glass cockpit, autopilot and air conditioning.

Pressfast Industries’ Malibu, KNV, is a Mirage, while Matilda Equipment’s, ZDJ, is a Matrix. Of the 16 Malibus currently fl ying in Australia fi ve are Mirage 350Ps, four each Malibu 310Ps and Matrix 350Ts, two Meridian 500TPs and a single after-market Jet Prop conversion.

Th ere is a relatively short Deletions section this issue with only 12 entries – one-third of which are reregistrations.

Bell 407 helicopter CUX has moved on to PNG after only seven days on the Australian register. Th e Bell 407 is proving popular in PNG where 13 now operate, whereas only nine are registered in Australia and one in New Zealand. Another short term registrant was Tiger Airways Airbus A320 FJR, which was transferred to its parent company in Singapore after less than two months on the local register.

As predicted in last issue’s Register Update, a third Virgin Embraer E-170, ZHC, has departed for the US where it has become N748CZ, while CHC Helicopters (Australia) has reduced its Super Puma fl eet in Australia to 12 with the departure of LHK to CHC in Canada.

Two aircraft have been transferred to the RA-Aus register, including ELS which was the only Best Off Skyranger left on the CASA register.

Th ere are now 19 on the RAAus register with another four fl ying in New Zealand. Lake LA-4-180 KOK has been cancelled after being withdrawn from use, leaving only three of the 180hp (135kW) engined Lakes fl ying in this country.

Eleven of the 200hp (150kW) Lake Buccaneers remain airworthy, with another three of the higher powered LA-250 Renegades active.
