Register Review

Two new types appear in the New Allocations this month along with the usual swag of Robinson helicopters, a couple of gliders and a few homebuilts and airliners.

Craig Taberner has imported Cessna 190 AAL, and although there are several Cessna 195s on the local register this is the first 190 to fly in Australia.

Craig is the president of the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia and for the past 15 years has owned the only Beagle Terrier still flying in this country, WFM. With a growing family he decided to sell the trusty Terrier to Neil and Penni Wilson, as noted in the June issue, and has obtained the equally unique Cessna 190.

The Cessna 190 was derived from the pre-war C-165 Airmaster following customer demand for a larger aircraft than the 120 and 140 that Cessna was producing soon after the war. The 190 is an all metal, high wing aircraft with a spring steel tail wheel undercarriage designed by Steve Whittman. It can seat five and was originally fitted with a 240hp (180kW) Continental W670 radial engine. The type was built in parallel with the 195 between 1947 and 1953 with the 195 using a 300hp (225kW) Jacobs engine (195) or 245hp (183kW) Jacobs (195A) or 275hp (205kW) Jacobs radial (195B). A combined total of 1183 Cessna 190s and 195s were built with Craig’s being quite an early example – serial number 129.

The second new type in the listing is Just Highlander AHC. Just Aircraft was formed during 2002 when aircraft designer Troy Woodland and Gary Schmitt got together at a US air show and talked about their ideal aircraft. Included in the discussion were a large cabin, lots of luggage space and a folding wing mechanism that avoided the need to remove control linkages. Before long the twohad worked out a rough plan and were busy refining it to suit both the amateur builder and customers that wanted a factory built, rugged flyaway aircraft.

The result was the Highlander and Escapade which shared considerable structural elements including the chrome-moly fuselage frame, the wing aerofoil construction and engine compartment. The luggage compartment on both types extends from behind the fully adjustable seats to the base of the tail and the Highlander and Escapade can be fitted with a tricycle or tail wheel undercarriage. A Rotax or Jabiru engine can be installed and Just Aircraft offers a fully factory built aircraft, a complete ready to assemble kit, or a ‘build assist’ option where the customer can assemble the kit themselves in the Just factory at Walhalla, South Carolina, under the watchful eye of company experts.

The Escapade is fitted with dual control columns and can therefore be used for touring or training, while the Highlander is the more rugged of the two models utilising a longer wing, taller, heavier undercarriage, tundra tyres, larger tail fin and balanced elevator and rudder. It can also be fitted with an even heavier duty axle to support larger tyres. Both models can be flown with the doors off and can be fitted with floats or skis.

The Highlander won Reserve Grand Champion at the 2009 Sun-n-Fun fly-in at Lakeland, Florida, while Escapade ZK-SKP won Best Two Seat Microlight at the recent Sports Aircraft Association gathering in New Zealand.

Alpine Aircraft Sales is the local agent for Just Aircraft and AHC has been sold to Peter Pendergast, brother of Alpine Aircraft Sales owner Michael Pendergast. AHC is fitted with a upgraded interior, tinted windows, long range fuel tanks and a 100hp (75kW) Rotax 912 engine. Another kit is presently under construction in Australia with a further four aircraft on their way for future customers.

As reported in last issue’s column, Alligator Airways has ordered five brand new Gippsland Airvans and have reregistered five older examples so as to use its old markings on the new aircraft. The result is that WOG, WOP, WOS and WOV have been changed to NOG, IOP, IOS and FOV respectively (WOQ to NOQ was shown last issue), and the five new turbocharged Airvans are included in the listing using the old Airvans’ markings.

Australasian Jet has won the contract to supply aircraft and crew to the Northern Territory Aero Medical Service and has imported four Norwegian Beech B200 King Airs. Two of these have now been registered ZMQ and ZMW, with Cessna 310 ZMY changing to IDK to allow the third King Air to become ZMY. Another change will have to take place to allow the fourth King Air to use a marking from the ZM block as all are presently in use.

XWN and XWQ are the first two of eight Fokker 100s recently obtained by Alliance Airlines from Germany. The aircraft will allow Alliance to expand its ad hoc charter business and provide much needed capacity from its growing Cairns base. It is believed that Alliance may lease at least some of the eight aircraft overseas until they are needed on its domestic network.

Cherokee 140 PRO is the only aircraft Returning to Register this issue after being revoked by CASA only 10 days before. PRO was imported during 1967 and was one of 131 of the type brought to Australia. Surprisingly, 97 of these are still flying.

The Cherokee 140 was a stripped down and lightened version of the Cherokee 150 developed for the Piper Flite Centre pilot training scheme.

It retained the 150hp (112kW) Lycoming engine but only had two seats. The Flite Centre scheme enabled anyone to walk into a Piper dealer and have an introductory flying lesson for US$5. Cessna copied the idea two years later, but Piper had the jump on its rival and the majority of American pilots at the time started with the cheap trial lesson, went on to learn on a Cherokee 140 and then purchased a Piper of their own – an amazing marketing technique for the time.

Between 1964 and 1968 945 PA-28-140s were built before Piper developed the ‘B’ model with minor interior and instrument changes.

Twenty-six aircraft are listed in the Deletions section this issue with more than half of these having registration changes that can be found in the new allocation listing. Semi-retired dairy farmer Ken Crichton has changed his Piper Warrior from BZG to EHL to enable Virgin Blue Airlines to use BZG on its next Boeing 737 in honour of recently retired founding CEO Brett Godfrey and his wife Zahra.

The 737 will be named Brett’s Jet which will be the first male name on any Virgin Blue aircraft. As a reward for allowing the registration change Ken and his wife will holiday in Canada and Alaska next year courtesy of Virgin Blue, while the other part owner of the Warrior will take his wife and child to South Africa.

Six aircraft have been deleted as a result of accidents, including the much publicised Airnorth Brasilia which crashed at Darwin during a training exercise killing the two pilots onboard.

Exports include Gippsland Airvan BQF to PNG, Cessna Skyhawk FGH to Indonesia, Swearingen Metro HAN to Korea and Virgin Blue Boeing 737 VOH to Bermuda. The 737 was registered in the US as N117MN for one day before going to Bermuda as VQ-BFY and follows VOG/N116MN/ VQ-BFZ into the Orenair fleet.

Ageing Saab 340B OLN had been static at Wagga Wagga for some time and had been used as a source of spare parts for the rest of the Rex fleet before starting a new life as a static training aid with Rex’s Australian Airline Pilot Academy. It has now been struck off the register, but as reported in Traffic last issue it now wears the fictitious registration PBS in honour of a Rex engineer who died late last year.

Hawker Pacific has delivered a further two Beech King Air 350s to the RAAF, ZHR and ZHS, leaving one more, ZHT, to complete the order for five aircraft.

Only one snippet from overseas this issue. Bell 214ST Big Lifter BEE, which flew in Australia between December 1991 and March 1995 firstly with Bristow Helicopters and later with Lloyd Offshore Helicopters, is now in Canada flying as C-GDYZ. Since leaving Australia the helicopter has seen service in the UK, USA and Bulgaria before recently taking up residence in Canada with Helicopter Transport Services at Carp, Ontario.
