Air New Zealand will more than triple the number of charter flights it operates to and from Japan over the southern summer as part of a partnership with Auckland Airport and Tourism New Zealand to boost arrivals from Japan.

Between December 26 2010 and 3 April 2011, Air New Zealand will operate 14 return charter flights to Auckland from nine departure points across Japan.

“The success of this Air New Zealand charter initiative has been striking and proves that through an innovative industry partnership approach New Zealand tourism can generate more growth out of an important high value market,” Auckland Airport general manager aeronautical business development, Glenn Wedlock, said. “We believe Japan still has significant untapped potential.”

According to Auckland Airport, only about 0.5 per cent of the total Japanese tourism market is captured by New Zealand, and it is hoped that the joint effort will help to increase that share.
