Register Review

CHANGE OF OPERATOR A109s Grand XNB is now registered to Rigby Hall
Investments in Sydney. (Les Bushell)

Two new types are shown in New Allocations this month with the most interesting being Angel 44 IOZ (see Traffic January/February issue for photo).

The Angel 44 is a development of the Evangel 4500- 300 which was designed by former missionary pilot Carl Mortensen in the USA.

Mortensen saw the need for a rugged, reliable, twin engine, STOL aircraft specially designed for missionary work in South America, and formed The Kings Engineering Fellowship to raise funds through donations for the project. His original design flew for the first time during 1965 and was an all-metal, high wing, fixed tail wheel undercarriage aircraft that could seat up to nine people. This aircraft was grossly underpowered, so Mortensen dismantled and rebuilt it in low-wing configuration using two 300hp (225kW)Lycoming engines. Two large cargo doors were added along with retractable undercarriage and fibreglass, down-turned wingtips. The first of these improved models was delivered during 1972 and eight aircraft were eventually built.

Meanwhile, Mortensen was working on an updated design which would become the Angel 44. The large fuselage cross-section and unusually large swept tail were kept, but the engines were moved to the pusher position behind the wing and a tricycle, retractable undercarriage was fitted. Two production aircraft were built during 2002 and 2003, and IOZ appears to be the third aircraft to come off the production line at Orange City, Iowa.

The second new type is the improved LS model of the popular Ukraine built Aeroprakt Foxbat. There are presently almost 60 Foxbats flying in Australia with most of these on the RA-Aus register, but NDN is the first A22LS to be seen on the CASA register. The MTOW has been increased to 600kg with 300kg carrying capacity due to a complete re-design of the undercarriage.

The nosewheel assembly now incorporates a gas filled shock absorber and a heavy duty main undercarriage has been fitted.

All nuts, bolts and fittings are now American standard rather than metric. Other improvements are a sleeker engine cowl and polished propeller spinner along with fully carpeted cabin floor. An interesting innovation is small storage compartments in the wing roots accessible from within the cabin.

CAC Winjeel OPJ is the only aircraft Returning to the Register this issue, with the elderly warbird back in Australian skies after almost four years flying in the USA. The Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation designed the Winjeel as a replacement for the ageing Tiger Moth and locally built Wirraway for RAAF basic flying training. The prototype made its maiden flight during February 1951 fitted with a CAC built 450hp (335kW) seven cylinder Cicada radial engine, but all production Winjeels were powered by Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior engines.

Sixty-two Winjeels were eventually built and delivered to the RAAF between August 1955 and December 1957, and the locally designed and built machine served the Air Force well until replaced in the basic training role by the CT-4A in 1975 and the FAC training role by the Pilatus PC-9. As with most basic trainers, warbird enthusiasts were keen to keep them flying after their military careers ended, and there are now 31 Winjeels on the local register with two flying in New Zealand.

OPJ started life as A85- 429 but was given the civil markings of MMR when Gary Volkers brought it onto the register during March 2002. Gary replaced the Winjeel with a Chipmunk in October 2004, and so that the Chipmunk could become the ‘new’ MMR the Winjeel was reregistered OPJ. Meanwhile Mark Awad from Dana Point, Southern California, had found love in Melbourne and during his regular trips to Australia to be with his fiancee he gravitated to Point Cook and found a second love in the Winjeel. With the encouragement of his first love he obtained OPJ and moved it to Albury where Steve Death assisted with the rebuild. Two years later Mark was married and the Winjeel was complete and they all moved to America, where it created much interest at airshows in being the only one of its type ever to fly in the Northern Hemisphere. Mark became an instant hit with the local warbird fraternity as noone had ever seen a Winjeel before and everybody was surprised to hear that it was designed and built in Australia.

Last year Mark and his family decided to make their home in Australia, so the Winjeel was disassembled and shipped back to the place of its birth, with its last US airshow appearance being the Commemorative Air Force show in Texas during October.

Twenty-one aircraft are listed in the Deletions section this month with more than half of these changing to RA-Aus or military markings or being re-registered within the CASA system and remaining in Australia.

With only six exports and 58 aircraft listed in the additions section, the total number of aircraft flying in Australia is still increasing and this shows a very positive trend for the Australia aviation industry.

Regional Express Saab 340Bs JRX and XRX have been leased to Nok Air at Bangkok and were flown to Townsville late last year for repainting. Nok Air is a Thai low cost carrier with Thai Airways International as the major shareholder. The two aircraft now sport a very colourful blue and yellow paint scheme with a stylised birds beak on the tail – Nok being Thai for bird (see Traffic March issue AA).

The two Saabs join nine Boeing 737s, two Cessna Grand Caravans and a single ATR 72 in the Nok Air fleet serving 14 destinations within Thailand as well as India and Vietnam.

Among the reregistrations is Alliance Airlines Fokker 50 AHX which has changed to FKP in keeping with other aircraft in the Alliance fleet.

The Fokker arrived in Adelaide from Malaysia last year, and the owners Werner Aero of America contracted Alliance to remove all useful parts and scrap the rest. However, Alliance has now done a deal with Werner to buy the complete aircraft and will restore it to flying condition and add it to its fleet.

Boeing 727 VLI, which was shown in December’s deletions as being exported to Malaysia, is now known to be operated by Neptune Air as 9M-NEP. The elderly 727 flew with Ansett as ANA between 1981 and 1997 before being exported to the USA. After also serving in Spain it returned to Australia during November 2002 and was used by Transaustralian Air Express, Jetex and National Jet Express prior to its departure to Malaysia late last year. Another ex Australian Boeing 727 on the move is TJD, which was with TAA between 1966 and 1979 before going to America.

The 727 is now owned by Prime Air Corporation of Roseau Valley, Dominica, and has just joined the Isle of Man register as M-FAHD. The Isle of Man is a small island off the west coast of England and has long been known as a tax haven for high flying companies and European sportsmen and women. The island has recently introduced its own aircraft register, which according to its policy statement “only caters for high quality private and corporate jets and twin turbine helicopters”. However, fixed wing aircraft below 5700kg that are owned by residents or businesses on the Isle of Man can also be included.

During 2004 three NSW Aerial Ambulance Beech Super King Airs, AMB, AMM and AMS were reregistered BQR, BRF and BRQ respectively prior to export to the US. All three aircraft were sold to an American aircraft dealer who reportedly passed them on to Air Turks and Caicos Islands as VQ-TIU, VQ-TRT and VQ-TRS. However, after a little research we can now verify that, while the details for BQR and BRQ are correct, BRF was noted at Fort Lauderdale during January 2008, still undergoing modifications to remove its medical equipment, and has only just been delivered to the Turks and Caicos Islands and, contrary to previous reports, is now with Provo Air Centre flying as VQ-TCI.

Capital Helicopters Bell 407 BJJ, which appeared in the April 2009 deletions, is now flying in China as B-7726 with Liu Buy-Right, while Cessna 402C NGG, which was cancelled back in 1999, is now in Peru operated by Air Majoro as OB-1921-P.

Twin Otter AHI has seen service in Malaysia, Indonesia and Switzerland since leaving Australia during 2001 and has now moved to the Maldives where it has been fitted with floats and joins 24 other Twin Otters in the Maldivian Air Taxi fleet based at Male. Maldivian Air Taxis was founded in 1993 by Lars Nielsen, who noted that every destination in the Maldives was surrounded by sea and with an airport the size of an ocean what better place to form a seaplane airline.

Since those humble beginnings with two Twin Otters and 25 employees, the company has grown, along with the local tourist industry, to 24 aircraft and over 350 employees.
