Hars Takes Delivery Of C-54 (Dc-4)

December 21 was a significant day for the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) when it took delivery of Douglas C-54 (DC-4) VH-PAF at its Albion Park, NSW, base. The arrival of the big Douglas airliner was the end of a one and a half year interstate restoration by HARS members. The airliner was based at Archerfield, Qld. when HARS took over ownership from Air Freighters International. HARS members then proceeded to breath life back into the aircraft, getting the airframe and engines airworthy once again. The aircraft had not flown for some years before HARS took it over. The right outer wing panel was found to have corrosion and was eventually replaced by a wing panel brought to Australia from the US. Some 5000 man hours of HARS members labour went into getting the aircraft back into the air for the flight south to the HARS base and museum at Wollongong Regional airport. The Douglas is the only one of its type in Australia and is a sister to the DC-4 airliners that plodded the Australian skies in the 1940s’ and 50s’.

Antartic Vickers Found

ON THE ROAD AGAIN The RAAF’s oldest and last Caribou to fly in service,
A4-140, was towed under police escort to the Australian War Memorial’s annex
facility, in the northern Canberra suburb of Mitchell, during the late evening of
January 28. The journey took just over three hours to complete. (Paul Sadler)

The remains of the first Vickers aircraft ever built has been found in its Antarctic resting place.
