Register Review

Two new types appear in the New Allocations this month, Brett Nixon’s Freedom IBY and Brian Durieu’s LS10 Glider GLQ.

The Colyaer S-100 Freedom is a Spanish designed and built composite two-seat amphibian powered by a Rotax engine. Construcciones Ligeras y Aeronauticas (Colyaer) was formed during November 1995 by Martin Lima and Jose Bujan who wanted to build a two-seat light amphibian aircraft that was easy to fly and was within economic reach of the average enthusiast. With a revolutionary approach the two men, plus three employees, built a prototype proof-of-concept, land plane within three years. A second prototype was constructed using the knowledge that they had gained from the first to produce a much improved version and this is now in production as the Colyaer Martin 3. The aircraft is a sideby- side two-seat all-composite machine with a high wing and a pod and boom layout. The pusher propeller and engine sit behind the wing and above the tail boom.

The next step was to develop a seaplane using the basic Martin 3 design but re-shaping the bottom of the fuselage into a v‑shaped prow. This was achieved after only one year of designing and testing and the result was the Mascato (Gannet) S-100. The final step was to design landing gear that would retract completely into the hull of the aircraft to produce a fully amphibious craft.

2006 saw the first prototype fly and only a few months later, and 11 years after the first drawings were made, the Coly-aer S-100 Freedom Amphibian was put into production.

Silent Wings Aviation is the Australian, New Zealand and Pacific sales agents for the Colyaer range of aircraft and it imported 10 Freedoms during 2008. Two of these have since been registered with the RA‑Aus, but Brett Nixon’s IBY is the first on the CASA register.

Brian Durieu’s DG LS 10 Glider is the result of over 40 years of glider development by firstly Rolladen-Schneider and later DG Flugzegbau in Germany. Wolf Lemke began designing gliders for Rolladen- Schneider in 1968 and the company went on to become one of the largest manufacturers of pure gliders and powered sailplanes in the world. Unfortunately with the high costs of developing the LS 10 and the general economic downturn the company has gone into liquidation. One of Rolladen- Schneider’s main competitors was DG Flugzegbau (formerly Glasser-Dirks) which has now taken over the rights to produce the LS 8 and LS 10 range of gliders and will build them alongside its own models at its factory at Bruchal, Germany.

DG Flugzegbau evaluated the LS 8 and LS 10 extensively and instead of compromising the proven design to produce a glider along the same lines as the DG 808 and DG 1001 it has kept the basic Rolladen- Schneider model with the only significant change being to include the engine stowage compartment in both the pure glider and powered sailplane models. Not only does this improve manufacture standardisation but allows for an engine to be retrofitted at a later date.

Like most modern gliders the LS 10 is a fully composite machine and features a tee-tail and winglets. The single seat glider has a 15m wing span with a 21. 7 aspect ratio and GLQ is the 19th LS 10 to come off the new production line at the DG Flugzegbau factory.

In a marked departure from previous practice the Royal Flying Doctor Service has received two Cessna 208 Grand Caravans for its Queensland operations. Up until now the RFDS has favoured the Pilatus PC-12 as the preferred single engine replacement for its Beech 200 Super King Airs, but the two Caravans have now joined the fleet. The two aircraft, NQC and NQD, were delivered via Christmas Island and Nadi to Cessna agents Aeromil Pacific at Maroochydore during November for pre-delivery checks before joining the RFDS at Cairns.

Two aircraft are listed in the Aircraft Returning to the Register section – Warrior CGR after spending two months flying as BHS, and Bonanza FWT after being revoked by CASA more than seven years ago. Piper Warrior CGR was revoked during May last year and for some reason it was allocated BHS when it returned to the register two months later. It has now returned to its original markings after only two months as BHS. Beech Bonanza FWT was revoked during September 2002 but is flying again in the hands of Gary Mexted after being out of the air for seven years.

Almost half of the aircraft shown in the Deletions listing this issue have been exported with two of these going to Suriname. Twin Otter TZR and Reims Cessna 406 Caravan JVN are now resident in Suriname, a small country on the north coast of South America bordered by Guyana, French Guiana and Brazil. Suriname is not the easiest of countries to obtain information from, so it seems unlikely that we will find out the subsequent markings for the two aircraft, although it is known that both of the twins will be operated by Blue Wing Airlines at the country’s capital Paramaribo.

Argyle Charter, based at Archerfield, has replaced Cessna 208 Caravan CXX with Pilatus PC-12 WPH (see New Allocations section) and the Caravan has been exported to the UK where it now flies as G-DLAA with Aerodynamics of Ruscombe. Vincent Aviation’s Beech 1900D NIA has returned to South Africa after completion of a lease through Awesome Flight Logistics in Perth. VZH/ZK‑ZQC is the third brand new Boeing 737‑800 to go to Qantas subsidiary Jetconnect in New Zealand and follows VZF/ ZK‑ZQA and VZG/ZK‑ZQB which were noted in last issue’s column. Also in New Zealand is Robinson R22 Beta HYS which was only registered in Australia for three days before going to Mattamatta Helicopter Operations at Mattamatta.

Skytrans Regional Dash 8 QQJ is now in PNG flying as P2-MCU and joins eight other Dash 8s and six Twin Otters in the Airlines PNG fleet based at Port Moresby.

Updating Australian aircraft now flying overseas, it is now known that Eurocopter Squirrel ADC, which was shown in last issue’s deletions, is flying with Skywork Helicopters at Warkworth, New Zealand, and is marked as ZK-HZZ.

SkyAirWorld Embraer ERJ‑145, which was temporarily registered in Ireland before being leased to Andalus Lineas Aereas in Spain, is now flying as EC-LDB, and Gulfstream Commander 690C UVT is now active in Honduras. The jet-prop Commander was one of only three 690Cs to operate in Australia and was exported to the US during July 1990.

After flying in America for 19 years, using four different US registrations, it is now based in Honduras where its exact ownership and registration details are a little vague, unfortunately.

Also now in South America are RFDS Beech 200 BRQ and Flight West Airlines Twin Otter XFC. The Beech Super King Air flew for 14 years in Australia, first with the NSW Aerial Ambulance, then with Skywest and Pearl Aviation and finally with the RFDS in Broken Hill before being sold in the Turks and Caicos Islands as VQ-TRS during November 2004. It is now based in Brazil where it flies as PR-JBT. The Flight West Airlines Twin Otter XFC went to the US in December 2005 but has recently moved to Guatemala where it has become TG-JCA with Mesoamerica Air Services at La Aurora.

Mal Rose’s very rare Junkers Junior UCC, which was exported to its homeland during March last year, is now registered D-EJUI with D Bende at Itzehoe, Germany, while in Kazakhstan is MBB BO105 PHO. The BO105, which was operated by the National Safety Council for a number of years, went to Germany during June 1989 and soon after moved to Kazakhstan.

Once part of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan was issued with the registration prefix UN- on independence, but as this was often confused with United Nations aircraft it has recently been changed to UP. Therefore the BO105 is now flying as UP-EC101.

In Africa, Air North Cessna 402C UCL has recently joined Sky Aviation at Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania. The aircraft was one of four Cessna 402Cs that Air North sold during June 1991, and after a short period of storage at Cairns were ferried to the US for onward sale. After several owners in America the aircraft now finds itself in Tanzania flying as 5H-IBM. Closer to home, Cessna A152 Aerobat FUH, which was shown in the May 2009 deletions, is now flying with Omni Aviation in the Philippines as RP‑C8861, while in Canada Bell LongRanger SWL is with Skyline Helicopter Technologies at Sudbury, Ontario, marked as C-GAUP.

The LongRanger was owned by Hamilton Island Enterprises but operated from Seaworld on the Gold Coast between December 1976 and August 1979.
