Register Review

The New Allocations this issue seems to be dominated by helicopters including 10 new Robinsons, split equally between R22s and R44s, along with an Enstrom Shark from the UK, two Bell LongRangers returning to Australia after a period in PNG, and two brand new Eurocopter AS350B3 Squirrels. Local products get a mention with a Kavanagh B-350 hot air balloon and three new Airvans from the Gippsland factory at Morwell, Victoria, while the only new type listed is Ravin 500 LST.

The Ravin 500 is a fully composite aircraft which had its first flight on September 15 2002 in Pretoria, South Africa, and is based on the Piper PA‑24 Comanche. Considered by many as the best looking aircraft that Piper ever produced, 4855 Comanches were built between 1958 and 1972 – many of which are still flying today.

The Ravin 500 is the brainchild of Jan Troskie who owned a Comanche and decided to modernise the basic design and make a good aircraft even better.

Troskie enlisted the help of aeronautical engineer Francois Jordaan and together they designed a look-alike Comanche but six-seven per cent smaller and 27kt faster.

The low wing, retractable undercarriage machine differs from the original Comanche with upturned wing tips and slightly smaller upward opening door replacing the conventional forward opening door. The aircraft is powered by a 260hp (193kW) Lycoming IO-540 engine – the same powerplant that was fitted to the PA-24‑260C Comanche.

The three blade propeller has trailing edge extensions which force high pressure air into the engine intakes, raising engine manifold pressure and enhancing performance.

Bernhard Lullfitz’s Ravin 500, LST, is a factory complete aircraft although the machine is also available in kit form. LST previously served as the company’s demonstrator and is the 16th Ravin 500 to be built with at least two more destined for Australia in the near future. Geoff Wood’s Viking Dragonfly, XTO, becomes the seventh of its type presently on the CASA register with a further two on the RA-Aus register and one in New Zealand. The Dragonfly is an all composite two-seat side-by-side touring aircraft, designed in the US and which first flew on June 16 1980. It received the ‘outstanding new design’ award at the 1980 EAA Oshkosh fly-in and was chosen as the ‘Grand Champion’ at the Ramona Fly-In in California later the same year. The design features a canard wing arrangement and the original Dragonfly’s main wheels were located in outriggers attached to the forward wing tips. The Mk II was developed for unprepared strips and narrow taxiways and had its main wheels located on short cantilever legs under the wings, while the Mk III is fitted with a fixed tricycle undercarriage.

Geoff obtained his Dragonfly around one-third complete and it has taken him about 4 ½ years to complete the project with the finished aircraft making its first flight during July.

XTO is fitted with a Jabiru 2200 engine and is finished in basic white with an attractive red, white and blue cheatline.

Both aircraft listed in the Aircraft Returning to Register section are back on the register after being revoked by CASA after “Failure of the new owner to apply to become the registration holder”. Duchess BDS was officially off the register for one day and King Air SGT for six months.

Thirty-nine aircraft make up the Deletions section this month with almost half listed as being damaged, destroyed or crashed, but some of the destroyed aircraft may have been broken up for spares retrieval after coming to the end of their useful lives. Five aircraft are noted as being revoked with one of those, Beech Duchess BDS, already back on the register (see Aircraft Returning to Register). Piper Navajo CFE will definitely not be returning to the register after being revoked as it was noted derelict at Cairns during August 2006. It was then reported as being moved by road to Caloundra during August 2007, but the fuselage was then seen back at Cairns by January 2008 with the wings located at Mareeba.

Of the exports, the three remaining Ozjet Boeing 737s, OZD, OZU and OZX (the fourth, OBN, was listed in last issue’s column) are going to the US, although at the time of writing only one had actually departed our shores. Embraer Bandeirante TLH is now in Canada operated by Aeropro of Sainte-Foy, Quebec, and Rockwell Commander 690B TSS has gone to Bolivia where this type of aircraft is often used in nefarious operations. TSS was converted to Renaissance configuration by General Aircraft Maintenance at Essendon during 2003, which involved the replacement of virtually all critical parts, interior and exterior refurbishment and an engine upgrade.

Of note in the Changes of Owner or Operator listing are the four Beech Skippers, HBJ, JUW, LBO and UMW, that were previously operated by Hempels Aviation at Archerfield and are now owned by Yak 1 at Moree, NSW. The Skipper was Beech’s attempt to break into the light twoseat training market which was dominated by the Cessna 150 and Piper Tomahawk at the time. Beech had concentrated on upmarket touring and corporate aircraft, but thought that it was losing out in the area where pilots were being trained on Cessna and Piper products and then became ‘brand loyal’ to those manufacturers when it came time to buy touring and corporate aircraft. Unfortunately Beech was always playing catch-up, and when the product liability crisis hit during the early 1980s the smaller two-seaters were the first to suffer with Beech producing only 312 Skippers compared to Piper’s 2519 Tomahawks and the 23,877 Cessna 150s. Sixteen Beech Skippers have come to Australia with 11 of those still flying, while two went to New Zealand with both of those still active.

Subsequent markings of two aircraft noted in last issue’s deletions as being transferred to the RA-Aus register are now known. Jabiru J230D VH-KRY is now 24-7189 and Cessna 150H VH-EYJ is now flying as 24-7181. Robinson R22 Beta HYX was exported to New Zealand way back on March 24 2006, but for some reason the aircraft has only recently graduated to the Kiwi register as ZK-HUM with Heliflite Pacific at Ardmore.

Going further back in time Aerospatiale Dauphin AHO, which flew in Australia between July 1991 and December 1994 before being exported to India, is now in France with Triponney Hélicoptère of Montbeliard and flies as F-GMTR. A couple of other helicopter movements are Bristow Helicopters Bell 212 BEY, which was exported to the UK then moved to Kenya and is now in Spain flying as EC‑KCO, and Lloyd Helicopters Bell 212 LAM which went to Canada, then to Ecuador, and is now back in Canada marked as C-FRWM. LAM operated in Australia between May 1985 and May 2001 with a short sojourn in Sweden during 1995, and was used by the United Nations in East Timor during 2000 and 2001 in an all white colour scheme and coded UNO-063.

Joining LAM in Canada is Beaver IDC, which is now C-FSRX with Thunderhook Camps in Armstrong, Ontario, and Boeing 727 TXE which now flies with Kelowna Air Charter at Kelowna, BC, marked as C-GKFJ. The Beaver was operated by Aerial Agriculture at Bankstown and later Superspread Aviation at Moorabbin between January 1964 and December 1995, while the Boeing 727 was used by Pacific Air Express, Air Cargo Australia and Transasia Air Express both as PAE and TXE before export to the US.
