Register Review

There’s a mixed bag of types shown in New Allocations this issue with six aircraft arriving from New Zealand – half of which are now operated by Wrightsair at William Creek.

Wrightsair specialises in scenic flights over Lake Eyre with William Creek being the closest township to the lake, only 100km away. Lake Eyre is the world’s largest salt lake and Australia’s largest inland lake and has been full only three times in the past 160 years.

With Queensland floodwaters now flowing into the lake and water levels edging toward the 1974 peak, tourist numbers are at an all time high and as a result Wrightsair has added three new aircraft to its fleet to cope with the additional patronage.

Wrightsair was formed in 1990 by Trevor Wright, and prior to the recent influx of aircraft from New Zealand the company operated a Cessna 172, 207, 210, 182RG and Gippsland Airvan. Cessna 207 Skywagon WAY, Cessna 207A Skywagon EYR and Cessna T207A Turbo Stationair JWA have now been added to the fleet.

The oldest of the three, WAY, is a 1970s model Skywagon originally delivered to Samoa where it flew as 5W‑FAP. It moved to New Zealand during July 1979 and operated for several small companies, including Westair, Tasman Bay Holdings and Flight Corporation, before being used by Transwest Helicopters at Nelson prior to coming to Australia.

Cessna 207A Skywagon EYR has seen service in Australia before as it was delivered new to S and T Enterprises at Cairns during May 1977 where it became SLD. After a very brief time with Civil Flying Services at Moorabbin (four weeks) and an even shorter time with Rex Aviation at Bankstown (three weeks), it went to Waterwings at Te Anau, New Zealand, which put it on floats and appropriately registered it ZK-WET in March 1985. The following year it was involved in a mid air collision with Cessna U206F ZK-DXD over Lake Manapouri with the aircraft suffering only minor damage and both landing safely. Milford Sound Scenic Flights at Queenstown obtained the aircraft in November 2000 and converted it to conventional landing gear before sale to Wrightsair.

The youngest of the trio is Turbo Stationair JWA, which was delivered new to Air Safaris at Lake Tekapo where it was registered ZK-SEW.

At the time the Stationair was the mainstay of the Air Safaris fleet which also included a single Pilatus Porter and GAF Nomad. Like ZK-WET, ZK‑SEW also went to Milford Sound Scenic Flights during December 2002 before export to Australia. WAY/ZK-DSE was delivered from Kerikeri to Kempsey via Norfolk and Lord Howe islands on May 19 with EYR/ZK-WET following the same route on May 29.

Airflite Cessna 182T Skylane IPC is a 2008 model which has come from Flightline Aviation at Ardmore, New Zealand, where it was registered ZK-JSL, while SMW Industries MD520 Notar KXS was operated by Faram Aviation at Gisborne, New Zealand, as ZK-III before coming to Australia. Cirrus SVS was originally delivered to Sunland Aviation at Archerfield during June 2005 but was sold to Cirrus Australasia (NZ) in January 2007 to become ZK-SRL and was sold to the Auckland Aero Club one month later. It returned across the Tasman on May 19/20 from Whangerei to Coffs Harbour via Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands.

Charlie Chua’s Stolp Acroduster UBC is only the second of its type to be seen in Australia, although there are several other Stolp types flying here. The Acroduster is a classic, fully aerobatic, two-seat biplane and its manufacturer claims it can match the aerobatic performance of any two-seat aircraft flying – presumably meaning Pitts and Christen Eagle. The aircraft is designed for amateur builders and uses a steel tubular fuselage with spruce wing spars and plywood ribs. All building materials are available from Stolp and items such as fuel tanks and turtlebacks can be obtained ready to install. The recommended engine is a 200hp (150kW) Lycoming, although power plants between 180 and 360hp (135 and 112kW) can be installed.

The airframe is stressed to +/- 9G and utilises four ailerons and symmetrical wings to produce a very agile aircraft.

Although the Stolp is designed as a homebuilt, both aircraft presently flying in Australia have been built in America and imported as complete aircraft.

Agusta A109S Grand serial number 22121 was registered NBX to Rigby Hall Investments on April 20, but for some reason this aircraft was not delivered and serial number 22122 was substituted. The result was that the first aircraft was cancelled on May 20 and the second machine was registered NBX on May 21.

The only two aircraft shown in the Aircraft Returning to Register section this issue, Robinson HXU and Air Tractor INO, are very short term suspensions as both were revoked by CASA only days before.

Details of Islander YIE’s delivery from Japan to Archerfield appeared in last issue’s column and we can now report that it has completed its refit and has been ferried to Kiribati. Ian Aviation at Archerfield refurbished the aircraft with a new avionics suite, HF radio, GPS and ELT along with a complete repaint. Ian Aviation also installed additional fuel tankage for the ferry flight giving around nine hours endurance.

The Islander departed Archerfield, marked as T3-VIN, on June 28 for Coolangatta thence Norfolk Island, Nadi, and Funafuti to Tarawa. On arrival it joined Islander T3-JMR (previously SQS) in the Coral Sun Airways fleet. While the first Islander is owned by Coral Sun Airways, T3-VIN is owned by Colville Aviation, a division of Ian Aviation, and is leased to Coral Sun Airways. The owner of the airline chose the aircraft’s registrations as J, M and R are the initials of three of his children with the fourth one named Vincent.

Other exports shown in the Deletions section are Air Tractor AT-602 NTL which is now in the US flying as N602MS with Adonis Aero Leasing of Yuma, Arizona, and Bell 212 NSY which is with Tasman Helicopters of Delta, British Columbia, Canada, and marked as C-GNSY. The big Bell seems to have an affinity with the registration NSY as it operated in India between January 1996 and October 1999 as VT-NSY.

Closer to home, powered glider Pipistrel Sinus ZHL is now active in New Zealand as ZK-GIM with Kester Holdings of Auckland.

The upgrading of the Regional Express Saab 340 fleet is almost complete with ZLY and ZRX listed as going to Poland,leaving KDB, KDK, EKD and EKT as the only 340As left to be replaced by 340Bs.

Unfortunately accidents account for more than one third of the deletions listed with some occurring a while ago.

Cape York Airlines Cessna Caravan CYC was damaged at Green Island during February 2004 with the wreck brought back to Cairns where the derelict fuselage still remains.

Likewise the fuselage of Tobago BXJ is still at Bankstown after being damaged during 2007.

As reported in the last issue of AA Cobham/National Jet BAe 146 NJA was broken up at Adelaide during May. NJA was the oldest BAe 146 flying in Australia and with the second oldest, NJE, being exported to the Philippines NJR now becomes the oldest flying example in this part of the world.

Sunstate Airlines continues to pass on its older 300 series Dash 8s to QantasLink sister operator Eastern Australia Airlines as it takes delivery of new Q400 series aircraft – as shown in the Changes of Owner or Operator section. SBT is the latest aircraft to move, which leaves SBW as the sole remaining series 300 in the Sunstate fleet.

Slingair at Kununurra has increased its fleet with a third Gippsland Airvan, BPL, being added. The company now boasts the three Airvans, seven Cessna 210s, four Cessna 208 Caravans, two Cessna 310s, two Navajos, and a single Cessna 207 and Cessna 206.

Subsequent details of some recently exported aircraft are now available with the two SkyAirWorld Embraer ERJ- 145s, SZF and SZH, now known to have become EI-EEJ and EI‑EEK respectively with Celestial Aviation Trading of Shannon, Ireland. Cessna 180D MDK, which was shown in the July listing as going to New Zealand, is now marked as ZK-BZP and flying with Tokoeka Bush at Rangiora. The two Oman Air Force helicopters refurbished at Caloundra, Queensland, and then exported to Quest Helicopters at Fort Nelson, Canada, Bell 212 VLK and Bell 206 CKU, now operate as C-FXXU and C-FXUQ.

A recent survey of the Indonesian register has found OLD AND BOLD With the breakup of BAe 146 NJA (see Newsdesk and Traffic July 09 issue) Cobham/National Jet’s NJR becomes the oldest 146 in the region. (Ryan Hothersall) Bell 412EP LYH marked as PK-TVR with Travira Air at Halim, Bell LongRanger AYQ registered PK-IWQ with Intan Angkas Air Service, and Aerospatiale Lama TUR flying as PK‑IWW, also with Intan Angkas.

LYH and AYQ were only in Australia for a couple of months during 2007, while TUR was the last example of the Lama to fly in Australia.

Continuing with helicopters, Bell LongRanger BXU is now in China flying as B-7715 with Beijing GUAC, and Aerospatiale Squirrel EEB, which was exported to Canada during 2005, is now in Morocco with Helisud Maroc at Marrakech registered CN-HKB.

Bristow Helicopters Bell 212 BEU, which flew in Australia between December 1989 and October 1995 before returning to the UK, has since been used in Nigeria and is now in Spain with Tragsa marked as EC-KCN.

Boeing 727 freighter VLF, the former Ansett RMN, was exported to the US during December 2007 but has recently moved to Panama where it flies as HP-1653CTH with PanAir Cargo at Tocumen.

National Jet BAe 146-100 NJZ, which went to the Philippines in April 2005, is now flying in Indonesia as PK-VTM with Manunggal Air Service. Finally, Fokker F28 ATD which served the Department of Transport, Department of Aviation, Civil Aviation Authority and Airservices Australia between May 1977 and March 1998, is now in the Ivory Coast registered TU-PAB.
