Register Review

The New Allocations section this issue contains three new types together with several new subtypes of aircraft already flying in Australia.

It is a long time since we have seen a new agricultural type in this country, but the Eagle DW-1 FTB is the first of four of this type that Blanchair at Ingham have recently imported. The DW-1 is a single seat biplane designed by Dean Wilson during the early 1970s.

It made its first flight from Boise, Idaho, in 1977 and 95 production aircraft were produced by Bellanca Aircraft, under licence from Eagle, between 1980 and 1983.

The DW-1 features an enclosed cockpit, and although early models were fitted with a 220hp (165kW) Continental W670 radial engine, most production machines used the 300hp (225kW) Lycoming IO-540-M1B5D horizontally opposed powerplant. The latter provided more power with a slimmer engine cowling, allowing better visibility for the pilot.

Eagle claimed that with the 16. 76m wingspan and economical engine the DW‑1 could spray more hectares per litre of fuel than any other comparable aircraft of its time, with a wider and more even spray pattern and minimal drift.

Blanchair operates from Ingham and Ayr in Queensland and offers aerial spraying, seeding and fertilising with both fixed and rotary wing equipment, as well as aerial survey and fire fighting duties in conjunction with Caloundra Helicopters. Blanchair also operates Air Tractor FEB and the Eagle FTB along with recently imported Bell OH-13H FZB. The Bell OH-13H is the military observation version of the venerable Bell 47G. FZB is believed to be a single seat conversion of the OH-13 known as the Tomcat or Wasp.

The Urban Air UFM-13/15 Lambada ZFG is an all-composite powered glider built in the Czech Republic which looks to have a very bright future with production recently increased to more than 100 aircraft per year. Designed by Pavel Urban in close cooperation with German glider manufacturer Schempp-Hirth, the prototype first flew in May 1996. Urban Air was founded two years later and a small production line was set up at Kerhartice.

The Lambada features a midwing with ‘cranked’ removable wing extensions, a tee-tail, fixed main wheels fitted with spats and a semi faired-in tail wheel.

The wings and horizontal stabilisers can be removed for easy transport and stowage. It can be powered by either the 80hp (60kW) Rotax 912 or 100hp (75kW) Rotax 912S which drives a two-blade Woodcomp Varia propeller with an electronic auto-feathering system.

The aircraft seats two, sideby- side, with the seats built into the structure of the aircraft forming an integral part of the fuselage. Two internal wing fuel tanks are fitted providing seven hours endurance and a range of 800nm under power, and an emergency ballistic recovery parachute is also fitted. Urban Air was recently taken over by a Luxembourg owner, Zetag, enabling the production line to be moved into a new modern facility at Usti nad Orlici with the workforce and production to be doubled.

The company has also obtained more land for future expansion.

Five aircraft are Returning to the Register, with four of these back after being revoked by CASA only days before.

The only entry of significance is Helicopter Resources Sikorsky S-76A XHA. This helicopter first came to Australia during January 1989 after service with the Royal Jordanian Air Force where it flew as ABLE- 10. It remained in Australia for the next seven years on contract and charter work with Helicopter Resources before being exported to China during September 1996. While in China it flew marked as B- 7306, but it is now back with Helicopter Resources based at Tyabb, Victoria.

Of the 41 aircraft listed in the Deletions section this issue, only 10 have been exported with the rest remaining in Australia and therefore not lost to Australian skies.

Eight aircraft have been re-registered and can be found in the New Allocations section under their new markings, and seven have been revoked by CASA after their new owners failed to file the relevant paperwork within the allocated time period. Five of these are already back on the register with the other two expected soon. Ten aircraft have been “withdrawn from use” and will, most likely, be back in the air sometime in the future. One has been transferred to the RA-Aus register, and even Rotorway Exec DHD, which is listed as “project not completed”, may be sold to another amateur builder and be back on the register after completion.

Of the exports, Bell 407 CJT and Robinson R44 JSW are now flying in PNG, Cessna 152 Aerobat FUH and Rockwell Thrush Commander MPM are in the Philippines, while Kavanagh E-300 balloon URI has gone to Fiji.

Chipmunk NMX, Kawasaki BK117 RLI and Boeing 737 TJZ now reside in New Zealand, with the Qantas 737 flying as ZK-JTS and becoming the ninth aircraft in the Jetconnect fleet.

The export of John Gallagher’s Chipmunk NMX is a loss to the local classic aircraft scene, but there are still 49 Chipmunks registered in Australia of the 218 different aircraft that have flown here over the years. NMX first came to Australia during February 1991 and was flown by Andrew Pitcher of Griffith, NSW, before it went to Westair Air Charter at Coonabarabran five years later. Ownership changed to David Knight during 2003 and then to John Gallagher in April 2006. The Chipmunk is now registered to Andrew Miller of Rangiora, New Zealand, and flies as ZK-CPY. There are now 17 Chipmunks flying in New Zealand.

The Kawasaki BK117 is a favourite in New Zealand, and therefore it is no surprise to find RLI being exported to Kiwiland. The BK is a particularly versatile helicopter and is ideal for medical emergency and rescue work. There are now 17 of the type flying in New Zealand with 21 in Australia and a further three in PNG.

The remaining three exports, not mentioned above, are now scattered around the world with Dornier 228 UJD now in Kenya, Condor glider YSH in Japan and Nimbus glider VJS now flying in America with Steven Leonard of Edgewood, New Mexico, and marked as N34ZS.

Some recent additions to the New Zealand register have been Piper Seneca ZK-NFS and CAC Winjeel ZK-WJL.

The Seneca is operated by the New Zealand Flying School at Christchurch and was shown in last issue’s deletions being ex MEP. The Winjeel was owned by John Weymouth of Heli- Muster but was sold to Hugh Jones of Auckland during 1998.

Jim Hazelton ferried the aircraft to Ardmore during April of that year via Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands, but it was not officially cancelled from the Australian register until April 4 2002. Meanwhile, it sat in the front yard of a house in Auckland for several years, still wearing VH-WHZ, before being moved to Taupo airport for maintenance prior to its first flight in New Zealand. Eleven years after leaving Australia it has at last been registered, very appropriately as ZK-WJL, and is back in the air with GC Aviation at Taupo.

Following up on some recent departures, Piper Super Cub JVL which was shown in last issue’s deletions is now active in the UK marked as G-CFSV, and Robinson R22 HFW is flying as ZK-IHQ with Aspiring Helicopters at Wanaka, New Zealand. Also in New Zealand, Zenair Zodiac ZSA has become ZK-MAM and is owned by Mikes Aviation Management at Turangi. Bell JetRanger JRZ, which appeared in the March list as being exported to China, is now known to be flying as B-7716 with Beijing Capital General Utility Aviation.

Moving on to some 2008 deletions not previously covered, two more Helicopter Aerial Surveys Hughes 500Cs, MBM and MHQ, which were officially noted as “withdrawn from use”, are now in the Philippines flying as RP-C1703 and RP-C1704 respectively.

The former is operated by Arba Enterprises and the latter by Venjo Trading Services – both based in Manila. Bell 407 YZZ is now in Canada marked as C-GZAV, Rex Saab 340A KDI has become LV-BTP in Argentina, and Agusta A119 Koala HFQ is now A2-HAR with Senn Foods in Botswana.

Linfox Agusta A109 FOX, which was reported as being exported to Italy, has now turned up in France with Skycom Helicopters at Archamps and registered F-GSNH. n
