Register Review

SWISS EC Former WPS EC 130 VES is now flying in Switzerland as HB-ZJQ. (Paul
Sadler)

Each month brings new and interesting aircraft to Australian skies. This month’s New Allocations listing includes the first three Boeing 777s to join the local register, while at the other end of the scale Nigel Flynn has completed his second home made hot air balloon, this time a French designed Dermecourt. Also listed is the first Gippsland TC320 Airvan to be delivered, along with the second EC 225 Super Puma for Bristow Helicopters and two more AgustaWestland AW139s.

There are now eight AgustaWestland AW139s operating in Australia and New Zealand, with several more expected during the coming year. The helicopter is extremely versatile and is already in use around the world as a VIP/corporate transport and in marine support duties including pilot transfers and offshore oil rig support, where its 15 passenger capacity and range of over 1000km is ideal. Law enforcement, SAR and fire-fighting agencies have been able to utilise the integrated avionics system to fit the comprehensive communications equipment needed in all these areas, and it has room for up to six stretchers in the main cabin and the ability to fight fires with either bucket or belly tank.

The two 1680shp Pratt and Whitney PT6C-67C engines provide a maximum cruise speed of around 165kt and an almost 3000kg useful load.

The two latest AW139s to join the register are NZE and NZF, which Helicopters (NZ) has brought here to support the Woodside Pluto liquid natural gas platform being constructed off the West Australian coast.

Both are brand new aircraft, but NZE did spend a short time flying in New Zealand before coming to Australia.

YBA is the first turbocharged Gippsland Airvan to be delivered with the prototype, FGN, which was converted from a standard Airvan, and the first new build aircraft, MTF, being retained by Gippsland Aeronautics as company aircraft. The GA-8-TC320 is powered by a 320hp (240kW) turbocharged (hence the designation) Lycoming TIO-540-AH1A driving a three blade Hartzell constant speed propeller. YBA joins two non-turbocharged Airvans in the Air Freight Solutions fleet at Bathurst, NSW.

Vol Mediterrani VM-1 Esqual FSE is the second of its type to join the CASA register, although there are at least another seven flying under RAAus marks.

The Esqual is a Swedish designed and built two-seater available as a kit or a factory complete aircraft. It is a low wing, tricycle undercarriage, all composite machine with the fuselage made with high density PVC foam and epoxy resins.

The wing has a composite double T spar with a secondary spar near the trailing edge. The luggage compartment is located behind the two side-by-side seats and can be accessed from the cockpit during flight. Electric operated flaps and mechanical trim are standard, although electric trim is a factory option.

A cabin heater and ballistic parachute system are also available as options. It is designedto accept several engine types including the Rotax 912ULS and 912UL and the Jabiru 2200 and 3300.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service continues to expand and re-equip with the addition of three new Beech King Airs to its fleet. MVX, MWH and MWK were delivered to Bankstown during January for fitment of medical equipment before delivery to Broken Hill. The RFDS fleet now totals an amazing 56 aircraft, consisting of 34 King Airs and 22 Pilatus PC-12s based at Broken Hill, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. While the NSW section favours the King Air and the Central section prefers the PC‑12s, both the WA and Queensland sections have chosen a mixed fleet of both.

Polish blue Former Virgin Blue 737-400 VGB now flies in Poland as SP-LLK.

Fourteen aircraft are listed as Returning to Register this issue with only one of these being a genuine restoration. The rest were officially cancelled by CASA after they changed hands and the new owner failed to apply to become the new Registration Holder. After the new owners have been advised and the appropriate paper work completed, the aircraft have been restored to the register – usually within a couple of days of cancellation and often the same day. The only exception to this is the Catalina Flying Memorial’s Consolidated Catalina which is back as CAT after its much publicised delivery flight from Spain to Australia using US markings N160AT.

Listed in the Deletions section this month is possibly the greatest loss to the vintage aircraft scene in Australia for a long time. Mal Rose’s extremely rare Junkers A50 Junior UCC has returned to its birthplace in Germany where it was built in 1929.

UCC is one of only three A50 Juniors left in the world and the only one still capable of flight.

The Junkers A50 Junior was a two-seat, single engine sports aircraft and was the first Junkers designed by Hermann Pohlmann after company founder Hugo Junkers was deposed by the Nazis. It first flew on February 13 1929 and the company expected to build around 5000 of the type. In reality only 69 Juniors were produced and only 50 of these were sold. Several engine options were available including the 79hp (59kW) Armstrong Siddeley Genet 5 cylinder radial which is the type fitted to UCC.

The first of two Juniors, UNO, came to Australia during 1930 followed by UCC in 1936.

Unfortunately UNO crashed at Manly Beach, Sydney, only four months after arriving and the accident sparked major legal battles issues. The pilot of the crashed Junior was Henry Goya who lost a leg in the accident while his passenger, Arthur Lumb, was killed. The powers that be deemed Goya unfit to fly due to only having one leg and cancelled his pilot’s licence.

Goya fought a bitter courtroom battle, claiming that authorities did not have the right to cancel his licence under those circumstances.

Goya won and continued to fly for many years after.

UCC remained active until June 1959 when it was cancelled from the register and put into storage. Some time later Cathay Pacific 747 Captain Mal Rose obtained the aircraft and began a lengthy rebuild to flying condition. This culminated in the Junior taking to the skies again in 1976 resplendent in basic Cathay Pacific colours and titles.

Unfortunately Mal has been busy with other projects in recent years and the aircraft has spent much of the time in storage, but it is expected that it will not take much work to get it airworthy again when it will become the only flying Junkers A50 Junior in the world.

UCC departed Australia shortly after Christmas and travelled by ship to Hamburg and then by road to Dessau where the original Junkers factory was located. There is one non-flying Junior preserved in the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany, and a second at Helsinki Airport in Finland.

Some recent exports of which more is now known are Eurocopter EC 130 VES and Rotorway Exec XAA.

The EC 130 was operated by Wright, Patton, Shakespeare from the Gold Coast between August 2007 and May 2008 before export to Switzerland, and it is now known to have become HB‑ZJQ with Helipool Europe at Mollis. Rotorway Exec 162F XAA was built by Alan Aston of Hawker, ACT, during 2000.

He sold it in Canada during December 2006, and it is now flying as C‑GOCZ with BD Green of Red Deer, Alberta.

Going further back in time, Beech 200 XFB was one of five King Air 200s with which Dennis Buchanan set up Flight West Airlines in the late 1980s.

These were replaced with Twin Otters and Bandierantes from PNG after Buchanan closed down Talair and brought all his aircraft to Australia. XFB went to Sweden and has since operated in Niger, Holland, France, Cameroon, South Africa, and more recently in Kenya where it flies with African Safari Express at Wilson as 5Y-XXC.

It is expected to change markings again soon to 5Y-FOK but continue to operate with African Safaris Express.

Other airliners on the move overseas are Virgin Blue Boeing 737s VGB and VOZ, along with Nordstress Australia 737 OAN and 767 NOA. The two Virgin aircraft were leased for two years during 2000 and were returned to the Irish leasing company in late 2002. Both aircraft have recently found their way to Poland where they fly as SP-LLK and SP-LLM with Centralwings at Warsaw.

(The VOZ registration lives on now with the first V Australia 777 – see title pic. ) Boeing 737 OAN was only used in Australia for 16 months before export to Belgium during 1995. It has since seen service in France, Greece and the UK before recently being leased to Seagle Air of Bratislava, Slovakia, where it is marked as OM-HLB.

Boeing 767-300 NOA flew in this country between 2000 and 2002 and at one stage was painted all white but with Qantas titles. It was exported to the US and after leases in Vietnam, China and the Philippines has now found a new home in Ethiopia where it flies as ET‑AMQ with Ethiopian Airlines at Addis Ababa.

One 767 that did not make it to Australia was ITH. These markings were reserved but were never worn as the aircraft stayed in the UK and later was leased in Italy. A recent move to Brazil has found the 767 now wearing PT-MSQ and flying with TAM at Guarulhos.

On the lighter side Cherokee Pathfinder DBW, which went to New Zealand as long ago as 1993, is now active in Kenya as 5Y-BSJ. Schempp-Hirth Standard Cirrus glider GFZ, which returned to England during 2002, has now been changed to G-CHZV. At the time of the glider’s export the British Gliding Association administered glider registrations in the UK and aircraft were given a BGA number and a three letter tail code, in this case BGA4343 and HZV.

Recent changes to UK regulations to align with European requirements have seen all UK registered gliders adopt a full G-registration. n Got something interesting to report? Email Tony at austairdata@ hotkey. net. au
