Register Review
An interesting and varied batch of aircraft make up the New Allocations this issue with a good cross section of helicopters, airliners, gliders and homebuilts along with several new and used single engine imports.
Close on the heels of Murray Moule’s North American T-28B Trojan, FNO, which was shown in the October 2008 listing, comes another new Trojan to Australian skies.
Tony Freer’s ZSH has joined FNO at the Aerotec facility at Toowoomba, Queensland, for re-assembly and a full test flying program. Tony’s Trojan started life with the US Navy but was retired and sold onto the civil market during 1984.
Courtesy Aircraft of Rockford, Illinois, converted it for civiluse and registered it N5439X during August of that year.
After a couple of private owners in Virginia and New Mexico, Courtesy Aircraft again owned the Trojan for two months during 2002 before it went to an owner in Florida where it flew in red and white US Navy colours coded 743/P. The aircraft was cancelled from the US register during April last year and it is expected that it will be on display at the ‘Gathering of Trojans’ fly-in at Toowoomba during May.
Of the 15 Trojans presently on the Australian register more than half are based in Queensland, and with only two not resident in the eastern states it would be great to see all but two Australian Trojans flying at the Toowoomba fly-in.
NTX is the seventh Beech 400A to come to Australian with five of these still flying in this country. The Beech 400 owes its heritage to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan which, after moderate success with its MU-2 range of high winged pressurised executive twins, designed a business jet which first flew during August 1978. Named the Diamond, the eight-seat aircraft was powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D turbofans mounted each side of the rear fuselage, and used a tee-tail to keep the tailplane clear of the jet efflux. Mitsubishi realised that the largest market for the jet was in North America and so parts for the aircraft were manufactured at Nagoya and shipped to San Angelo, USA, where final assembly and test flying was completed before delivery. Performance was always an issue for the Diamond and after several engine upgrades resulting in the Diamond I, IA and II, and with only 98 aircraft built, the production rights were acquired by Beech during 1985.
Beech felt as if it was being left behind by Cessna when the latter introduced the Citation in 1971, so the Mitsubishi deal gave it a ready-made business jet with which it could make up lost ground. In reality this never quiet happened and the Cessna Citation range remains the biggest selling bizjet family.
However, Beech did develop the Diamond into a very respectable aircraft which has sold almost 600 units to date.
The first batch of 65 Beech 400 Beechjets were built from components supplied by Mitsubishi, but Beech soon moved production to Wichita and began full production using US made parts. Beech also used American electronic systems on the aircraft and updated the interior trim. The Beechjet 400A was introduced in 1989 and featured a much larger cabin, performance improvements and an EFIS cockpit. The military 400T Jayhawk was also developed for the US Air Force and this model was ironically also sold to the Japanese Air Self Defence Force.
The Beechjet proved a consistent seller and gave Beech a stepping stone into the bizjet market. The Beechjet experience also enabled Beech to develop the British Aerospace 125 series, which it later acquired, and develop an all new range of bizjets, the Premier and 4000 (nee Horizon).
Only one of the original Mitsubishi Diamonds came to Australia, JEP, which was operated by Ormonde Butler of Moree, NSW, between October 1985 and April 1987.
Of the five Beechjet 400As still flying in this country, three are operated by Business Aviation Solutions at Sydney, one with Executive Airlines at Essendon, and NTX with Professional Jet Aviation in Sydney.
Forty-one aircraft are listed in the Deletions section this issue with almost half of these being exported. The country of preference this month is Malaysia due to the mass exodus of the five China Southern WA Flying College Piper Senecas. The Senecas have been providing twin engine training to mainly China Southern Airlines students for more than seven years, but are now flying in Malaysia where their local markings are yet to be revealed.
The Royal Queensland Aero Club has returned its two DA-40 Diamond Stars, ABT and AEA, to the manufacturer after a two year lease. The two aircraft are now registered to Diamond Aircraft Sales of Chicago, Illinois, but are believed to be heading for the Diamond factory in Canada. It remains to be seen whether they will be registered in Canada or America.
Four aircraft are known to be heading for the US – Beaver AQA, Bell 407 CKJ, Boeing 717 NXC and Turbo Otter OTV. The Otter spent much of its early life with the Indian Air Force before being converted to turbine power and coming to Australia during Novem-ber 1997. The float equipped aircraft was noted being loaded into two containers at Broome, WA, just before Christmas, heading for Alaska where it will be operated by Talkeetna Air Taxi registered N510PR.
NXC/N490HA is the second of three QantasLink Boeing 717s to go to Hawaiian Airlines, joining a fleet of 11 such aircraft along with 18 Boeing 767s.
De Havilland Beaver AQA has had a long and varied career, starting life with the Ghana Air Force before coming to Australia during the early 1970s. Aerial Agriculture at Bankstown imported the Beaver, along with several others, as aerial spreading and fertilising was booming in Australia at the time and the company was busy with its own spraying business as well as supplying converted Beavers for other operators. A large batch of un-converted Beavers and several Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneers were a common sight to Bankstown visitors during the 1970s, and among them would have been this particular Beaver which became IML in 1974.
The aircraft was exported to Malaysia during August 1979, but returned in 1983 and was then converted to a seaplane and used by Aquatic Airways on its Rose Bay-Gosford service marked as AQA. Aquatic Airways became Sydney Harbour Seaplanes and then just Sydney Seaplanes, but the elderly Beaver has now gone to the US where it will fly as N37761. Interestingly, these are the same markings that were reserved for it way back in 1974 but they were never officially allocated until 35 years later.
Unfortunately the four accidents listed resulted in at least four fatalities. Three people were killed when Cessna 206 Super Skywagon JDQ crashed near Scone, NSW, and the pilot of Gippsland Airvan WRT was lost when it crashed into Buckingham Bay, Northern Territory.
The owner of JDQ had just bought the aircraft and was ferrying it from Bankstown to his home in Queensland when it crashed shortly after refuelling at Scone. The Airvan was on a freight charter from Elcho Island to Mata Mata when it was reported missing, and wreckage from the aircraft was later discovered in Buckingham Bay with no sign of the pilot.
Piper Cherokee RJZ crashed at Hoxton Park, NSW, during 2007 and PZL Dromader NRA crashed while spraying near Mungindi, Queensland, as long ago as December 2005.
The Changes of Owner or Operator section reveals that the Qantas Group has transferred another Dash 8 from Sunstate Airlines to Eastern Australia Airlines – SDE being the last series -200 in the Sunstate fleet.
Eastern Australia now operates 16 series -300 and -200 aircraft while Sunstate has 17 series Q400 and -300 models.
Glenample Air has added a used Robinson Raven II, HDC, to its fleet of four brand new Raven IIs that it acquired during October 2007 to set up its operation on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, primarily conducting scenic flights along the coast and around the Twelve Apostles to the west of Melbourne.
One of the largest and most active aero clubs in Australia, the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia, has added another Mooney to its large fleet of aircraft. The Mooney has been a favourite of the club for some years with its performance ideally suited to the long distances between landing areas in WA. The club now has 36 aircraft available to its members including seven Mooneys, a large fleet of Cessna 152s and 172s for training, three twins, two Tiger Moths and a Chipmunk – quite a line-up.
Further details are now to hand about three aircraft exported late last year. Regional Express Saab 340 KEQ is now known to have become S5- BAO in Slovenia, while Socata TBM700 XTB is now flying in France as F-GZRB. The TBM was in Australia for less than 18 months after Australian Aerospace imported it from Malaysia in February 2007.
Finally, Helicopters (Australia) Aerospatiale Squirrel WCW has returned to its parent company in New Zealand and is now marked as ZK-HNR.
Helicopters (NZ) and Helicopters (Australia) regularly move aircraft between the two companies as workload demands, with the New Zealand company favouring the Squirrel (20 out of a fleet of 27) and the Australian company preferring a more mixed fleet with only seven of the 15 strong fleet being Squirrels. n Got something interesting to report?
