Register Review

The New Allocations section this issue contains some locally produced aircraft along with two interesting imports not seen in Australian skies before.

DWF is the fifth Dean-Wilson Boomerang to come off the production line at Kingaroy, Queensland, and although the build rate is slow at the moment it can only improve as more orders come to hand and local flying schools recognise the potential of this great little locally produced trainer/tourer.

The International Balloon Flight Company, Peregrine Ballooning and Raging Thunder Balloon Adventures have all added Kavanaghs to their fleets recently, bringing the number of hot air balloons built by Kavanagh to almost 390.

Steve Saunders’s Piper Malibu, SJM, is the first Matrix variant to arrive in Australia.

This six seat high performance single now boasts a six cylinder, 350hp (260kW), turbocharged Lycoming TIO-540-AE2A engine driving a three blade, constant speed composite Hartzellpropeller and is fitted with an all-glass cockpit. Dual Garmin GNS 430 Nav/Com/GPS, Garmin GTX 330 Transponder and Garmin GMA 340 audio panel are standard equipment and options include a traffic advisory system and weather radar.

Airframe options are speed brakes and wing, empennage, propeller and windscreen antiice protection. Cruise speed is 215kt at 25,000ft and range is up to 1400nm. In all, a very upmarket package.

At the other end of the scale is the second new type shown in the listing, the Alisport self launching glider, SIW. Built at Cremella, near Milan, in northern, Italy the Alisport Silent 2 comes in three versions, a pure glider or a self launching glider fitted with a two-stroke petrol engine or a battery powered electric motor.

The Silent 2 is a single seat carbon fibre aircraft with a 13m elliptical planform wing and removable winglets. The powered versions are designed for self launches only and are not recommended for long cross country flights using the motor.

The petrol engine is a modified single-cylinder, two stroke, MZ powerplant driving a two bladed propeller via a belt drive, whilst the electric version uses 12 lithium batteries weighing 42kg to power an electric motor which turns the propeller via a direct drive. Both systems are housed in the fuselage behind the cockpit and fold back into the main airframe when not in use.

All three versions are available as a factory complete glider or as a quick build kit. Silent Wings Aviation is the local agent for the Alisport range of gliders including the Silent Club, Silent 2 and Silent Targa, and have imported SIW for local sale.

Meta Sokol DUY is the only Aircraft Returning to the Register this month and it is back after a 24 year break.

The aircraft was one of nine Meta Sokols imported from Czechoslovakia by Dulmison Aircraft of Sydney between 1960 and 1964. Surprisingly, five of these are still on theregister with DUY becoming the sixth.

The history of the Meta Sokol goes back to the 1930s when Benes-Mraz produced the BE-50 and BE-51 trainers and BE-550 two-seat touring aircraft at its Chocen facility.

When Germany invaded Czechoslovakia the aircraft factory was turned over to land transport and ammunition production, but during the war years the Benes-Mraz designers secretly drew up the plans for a new low wing, two seat touring aircraft called the Sokol. Soon after the end of the war the Sokol went into production, and between 1946 and 1950 a total of almost 300 were built in five different versions.

The Meta Sokol was a development of the Sokol but used an all-metal fuselage, a tailplane and fin arrangement with interchangeable parts and an unusual “reverse tri-cycle” undercarriage. The main wheels were slightly ahead of the leading edge of the wing, the same as the tailwheel Sokol, but the third wheel was located centrally under the fuselage aligned with the trailing edge of the wing. All wheels retracted backwards up into the fuselage.

The original Meta Sokol seated three and was powered by a 105hp (78kW) Walter Minor engine, but later models had a 140hp (105kW) supercharged Walter engine fitted and the cockpit re-arranged to seat four. Around half of the 107 Meta Sokols built were exported, although it proved to be no match for the US imports that were flooding the Australian market during the 1960s.

DUY came to Australia during 1961 and was sold to Bob McCosh of Warrnambool, Victoria, in July 1962. Mc- Cosh owned the Meta Sokol for the next 22 years until it was de-registered on July 13 1984. After a prolonged period in storage the elderly aircraft is now back on the register in the hands of Dave Harris in Norwood, South Australia.

Thirty-six aircraft are listed in the Deletions section this issue with around one-third of these being re-registered, one-third cancelled as a result of damage and the rest exports, transfers to the RA-Aus register and a single aircraft listed as withdrawn from use.

The exports include four Eastern Australia Airlines Dash 8- 100s, TQN, TQQ, TQT and TQV, which have been in storage at Brisbane for a while but departed for Kenya during October (refer Traffic for more details).

With the transfer of TQU and TQW to Skippers Aviation in Perth, and their subsequent re-registration to XFP and XFQ, it now means that QantasLink/ Eastern no longer has any 100 Series Dash 8s in its inventory.

The early model Dash 8s have served Eastern well with the first two, TQO and TQP, arriving during December 1988. TQP was the fourth Dash 8 built. The first was the prototype which was eventually broken up during August 1990 and the second was a demonstrator retained by Bombardier/ DHC. The first production aircraft was delivered to Air Ontario and the second production machine became TQP. Although retired from the Eastern fleet some time ago, TQO and TQP continue to fly locally with Queensland Regional Airlines as QQH and QQB respectively.

Hawker Siddeley 748s AHL and AMQ were among six of the type brought onto the civil register after service as navigator trainers with the RAAF at East Sale. The future for this type in local skies has always been tenuous and although one did find a new home in Swaziland, Africa, it seems the other five have been, or will be, scrapped. AHL and AMQ have been in storage at Southend, UK, since February 2005 and although they are listed as being exported to the US it is expected that they will be broken up at Southend and only useful parts will end up in America.
