Register Review

Two new types are shown in the New Allocations section this month, an elderly Scottish Aviation B125 Bulldog, CHU, and a brand new Eurocopter EC 225LP Super Puma ZFB.

Charlie Chua’s appropriately registered Bulldog CHU was the 110th aircraft off the production line at Prestwick, Scotland. It was registered briefly as G-AZAO for test flying before being delivered to the Swedish army during October 1971. More than 30 years later the Swedish army’s Bulldogs were retired from military service and joined the Swedish civil register.

CHU became SE-LLG briefly before going to the US during December 2004 and flying as N747BD. CHU’s last American owner before coming to Australia was Jacob Raphael of Norwalk, Connecticut.

Bristow Helicopters Australia’s EC 225LP Super Puma, ZFB, was delivered from the Eurocopter factory at Marignane, France, to Bristow’s base in Aberdeen, Scotland, on June 13, having previously been registered G‑ZZSO. After crew training and air conditioning and external fuel tanks were fitted (allowing for a mission radius of over 250nm), it flew to Malta where it was loaded onto Heavylift Short Belfast RP-C8020 for its final leg to Broome where it arrived on August 9.

The EC 225 is a development of the AS 332L Super Puma of which Bristow Helicopters already operate 12 from its bases in Western Australia.

Chris Mulloy’s Bushby Midget Mustang NSX is only the second single seat Midget Mustang to fly in Australia and comes from the USA where it was a Champion Amateur- Built at the 1983 Oshkosh Airshow. Built by American Bruce Whittig of Boise, Idaho, NSX was the third of its type that he built, each time improving on the basic design and including extra features in each aircraft. The aircraft ispowered by a 165hp (125kW) Lycoming IO-320 engine giving approximately 197kt cruising speed. The fuselage is 30cm longer than the standard aircraft and the landing gear has been raised to accommodate a larger diameter constant speed propeller. A full range of instrumentation, leather upholstery, provision for a parachute and a canopy that is able to be jettisoned completely if required makes the cockpit a work of art. A special compartment for fishing rods is also provided.

Bruce Whittig oversaw the crating of the aircraft in the US and then flew to Australia with his family to help with re-assembly and test flying.

He also made a short documentary film of the packing, shipping and re-assembly.

The Midget Mustang has only completed 393 hours of flying since it was built and is finished in a pearl white with a terra cotta side stripe. The registration, NSX, is derived from its US markings, N3X.

Two aircraft are Returning to the Register, Beech Baron JWP and Tiger Moth KBX.

Keith Powell’s Tiger Moth’s registration was revoked by CASA during August 2006, and Baron JWP was withdrawn from use during March 2007 after it was deemed uneconomical to repair while owned by the Singapore Flying College at Jandakot. It seems that this decision has now been reversed as the aircraft is back on the register after a 16 month break.

There is a large Deletions section this issue with the usual batch of re-registrations and aircraft “withdrawn from use” including Lynette Zuccoli’s CAC Boomerang, BOM, Auster J/5G Cirrus Autocar, BYP, and the rare Beagle 206 UNI.

The late Guido Zuccoli restored Boomerang BOM to flying condition in the early 1990s and since his untimely death the aircraft has resided in his museum at Toowoomba which his widow Lynette has kept open in his memory.

However, as the museum comprises mostly flyable aircraft and as the Boomerang is unlikely to fly again, it has been donated to the Museum of Army Aviation at Oakey where it will be put on display as a memorial to a man who did so much for the warbird movement in Australia.

Auster BYP and Beagle 206 UNI will also go on display after restoration work by the dedicated members of the Queensland Air Museum at Caloundra. The Auster will represent hundreds of the type, many of which are still flying, that came to Australia during the 1940s and 1950s and in which many current Australian pilots learned to fly. UNI is one of only six Beagle 206s that came to Australia – three of which were used by the RFDS between 1967 and 1978. The Beagle 206 was designed with quite a large cabin for its overall size and was preferred by the RFDS for its ability to accommodate a stretcher.

Exports include Cirruses EDP and EDQ to Indonesia, Bell 205 AWU and Kawasaki BK 117 BZD to PNG, Lindsay Fox’s Agusta A 109S FOX to Italy and Cessna 172M FYL to an undisclosed country in Africa. Metro 23 HPG has gone to the US where it now flies as N812LD with Aircraft Consultants of San Antonio, Texas, while Agusta A 109E THG is also in Texas with Helicopter Exchange of Bedford flying as N347TE.

Six aircraft have crossed the Tasman including Bell 407 HRR which has joined the Nokamai Helicopters fleet at Nokamai Station, Lumsden, and is now marked as ZK-HNY, and Robinson Raven RTR which now flies as ZK-HXI with TB Green of Taupo.

Virgin Blue Boeing 737 VUP has joined the Pacific Blue fleet as ZK-PBK and, as predicted in last month’s issue, Beech 1900D EAS has now become ZK-EAR after pre-delivery maintenance with Hawker Pacific in Cairns.

Other exports of interest are BN Defender YVH, which has returned to its previous UK markings of G-BWPO, Challenger 604 OCV, which is now in Bulgaria, and Regional Express Saab 340A KEQ, which is heading for Bridges Worldwide Freight in Slovenia.

The Saab is the first of several that will be converted to freighters at Wagga Wagga before onward sale.

From Africa comes the news that East West Friendship EWU has been written off in a fatal crash in Somalia on August 13. The aircraft, registered 5Y-BVF, was on a flight from Kenya carrying a cargo of khat (similar to tea) to a bush airfield approximately 50km SW Mogadishu. Early reports suggest that the Friendship encountered bad weather on arrival and struck a telecommunication antenna on approach. The aircraft was destroyed and the three crew members perished.
