Register Review

The New Allocations section this month covers a very large cross-section of aircraft types from gliders and the usual gaggle of Robinson helicopters to jet airliners and bizjets, with the latter two groups in evidence.

Qantas has added VZC, VZD and VZE to its growing fleet of Boeing 737-800s making a total of 38 now in service, while Jetstar’s Airbus A320 VQD brings its fleet of this type to 36. Network Aviation has added a third Fokker 100, NHF, to its fleet – this one from the US whereas the previous two were sourced from Germany.

Two Embraer 145s, SZF and SZH, have joined E-170 SWO and E-190 SXK, maintaining SkyAirWorld’s all-Embraer fleet.

Celijet has upgraded its Citation CJ1 ANE to a CJ3 with the CJI being re-registered YNE to enable the new CJ3 to use ANE. ANE now joins Dick Smith’s MIF as the only two CJ3s on the local register. Meanwhile in Perth, Revesco Aviation has imported an early model Canadair Challenger 600, ZSU, making five Challengers now flying in this country including three 604s and a single 850.

EAS is one of three Beech 1900Ds previously used by Japanese third level airline Airtransse at Sapporo- Okadama. The aircraft is on its way to Eagle Airways in New Zealand who will operate it on behalf of Air New Zealand Link as ZK-EAR.

Hawker Pacific in Cairns has been contracted to perform pre-delivery maintenance on the aircraft and it has taken up local markings to facilitate test flying prior to delivery across the Tasman.

Pegasus Air has changed its Pilatus PC-12/45 PIL to PIU so that PIL can be used on its brand new PC-12/47E. This is the first 47E model, better known by its marketing name ‘Next Generation’, to be seen in Australia. It boasts a fully integrated Honeywell avionics system, a completely new cockpit designed by BMW Group Designworks USA and a more powerful P&WC PT6A-67P engine.

Tim Kroeger’s Sportavia RF4D TKD is an all wooden single-seat motorised glider recently imported from the US. Designed by Frenchman Rene Fournier, who had received financial help from the French government for his earlier designs, the RF4 was the first of the series to have a laminated pine spar which greatly increased the integral strength of the airframe. During 1960 Alpavia, who built the RF4 in France, joined forces with German aircraft manufacturer Putzer to form a new company, Sportavia, specifically to produce and develop the RF4. The result was the RF4D, the suffix standing for Deutschland as the aircraft was now being built at Dahlemer Binz in Germany.

Rene Fournier then developed the RF5 which was a larger two-seat training motorised glider based on the RF4. There are presently two RF5s on the local register as well as four RF5Bs which was a further development of the RF5 and included a much larger wing span, a bigger cockpit canopy and a cut down rear fuselage.

Several prototype versions of the RF4 and RF5 were built including a two-seat reconnaissance aircraft for the German air force, a tricycle version which used the undercarriage of the Grumman Traveler, and the SFS-31 Milan which mated the wing of a Scheibe SF-27 glider to the fuselage of an RF4. TKD joins three other RF4Ds flying in Australia.

Angus Peart’s GUS-69 is a self-designed and built hot air balloon which began life on the family kitchen table last Christmas. It has a 20 gore, 69,000cu ft capacity envelope and a three-person basket.

Angus qualified as a balloon pilot last year and at the time was the youngest person in Australia to do so.

Three aircraft have Returned to the Register this issue with Blanik glider GOL and Cessna 150M UQO back after being revoked by CASA on the same day in July last year, while the history of John Barnes’s Grob G109 powered glider XQG is much more interesting. The aircraft was imported from Malaysia during 1992 and flew for nine years before it was realised that the aircraft was still officially registered in Malaysia as 9M-KFC.

It seems that the glider was obtained from a Malaysian aero club which was in dispute with the person from whom it had been bought. As a result the original owner had refused to sign the de-registration and export papers until the dispute was settled.

With no Malaysian paperwork forthcoming the Grob was de-registered in February 2001 and it has taken a further seven years for the mess to be sorted out and XQG to get back into the air.

Amongst the usual transfers to the RA-Aus register and changes of markings in the Deletions section this month are three serious crashes and what is believed to be an arson attack. Pitts Special NUK was on a flight from Bankstown to Bankstown via some circuit training at Camden when it clipped trees and crashed 7km from Camden airport in March.

Unfortunately the occupant of the rear seat was killed with the person in the front seat receiving minor injuries.

Nanchang CJ-6A NNY was destroyed at Moruya when it crashed during May, and the pilot and passengers of Bell JetRanger NBP were very lucky to have escaped with their lives when the helicopter crashed near Hornsby, NSW, in March. The pilot received minor injuries whilst the four passengers were seriously injured in this much publicised crash with relatives of the passengers watching and filming the flight.

Grumman Tiger IGH was destroyed by fire at Tralee Station, NSW, on the night of March 24 in what is thought to have been an arson attack.

Peter Daley’s Cessna Hawk XP, XPM, was also damaged in the attack. Peter Daley was a much liked and respected ex air traffic controller who later joined the ATSB and who recently passed away.

Twin Otter VHM was imported from Indonesia some time ago in a damaged state, and after a complete rebuild by Hawker Pacific in Cairns has been sold in Nigeria.

North American Harvard SFY has been with the RAAF Museum at Point Cook for some time and has not flown for a while. The museum has decided that it is too expensive to keep the Harvard in flying condition and have de-registered it. It will now remain as a static exhibit only.
