Register Review

The New Allocations this month contain two new powered types, Mooney Acclaim and Lancair Legacy, and three new glider types about which very little is known.

JSD is the first Mooney M20TN Acclaim to join the local register at a time when Mooney is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Like most other western GA manufacturers Mooney has seen its fair share of bankruptcies, takeovers, failed projects and lean times but through all this the company has always produced a very fast, comfortable and sleek flying machine with the Acclaim – featured in May issue AA – continuing that trend. Claimed to be the fastest piston single in production the Acclaim is powered by a 280hp (210kW) Lycoming TCM TSIO-550-G engine featuring twin turbo chargers and dual intercoolers driving a Hartzell three blade propeller.

Top speed is around 240kt.

Lancair Legacy LLQ is the first of its type to been seen in this part of the world and is a two-seat, single engine, all composite kit aircraft. The lineage of Lancair is interesting with American Lance Neibauer designing and flying the first Lancair 200 during 1984. The Lancair 235, 320 and 360 quickly followed and during 1990 Neibauer developed the Lancair IV which incorporated four seats and a 350hp (260kW) Continental engine. The Lancair ES was a simplified version of the Lancair IV and had a larger wing, fixed undercarriage and 210hp (157kW) engine.

The Lancair Columbia was developed from the ES but was the first Lancair model to be factory built at the company’s facility at Bend, Oregon.

The Columbia proved quite popular and a separate company, Columbia Aircraft – since purchased by Cessna – was formed to manufacture and market the aircraft while Lancair continued to produce kits for the amateur builder.

The Legacy is the latest offering from Lancair and is a development of the 360 with a completely redesigned wing and larger cockpit.

The wing now has a unique double taper to increase cruise speed and improve low speed handling while the cockpit is wider and taller and has more baggageroom. Recommended engines are the 310hp Continental IO‑550 or the 260hp (195kW) Lycoming IO-540.

Four more locally produced Kavanagh hot air balloons have been added to the listing with Raging Thunder Balloon Adventures receiving its ninth example for tourist flights in the Cairns area. Raging Thunder has been a long time supporter of Kavanagh Balloons and its all Kavanagh fleet consists mainly of the large capacity B-350 and B-400 series models.

Daryl Beattie’s IIR is a smaller D-77 balloon and carries the winged logo of the Honda Motorcycle Company.

Former World 500cc Grand Prix motor bike racer Beattie rode for Honda between 1992 and 1997 but now enjoys the more relaxing pursuits of co-commentating on Channel 10’s RPM motorsport show and ballooning over the Gold Coast hinterland.

Kavanagh has been busy recently with deliveries of its balloons to Malaysia, South Africa and Kenya, where tourist balloon rides over the wild animal reserves are very popular.

Airwork Helicopters at Caboolture, Qld, has registered another three Bell OH‑58A Kiowas with the first, EQT, having already flown and the other two, LTX and PKG, still in the workshop being converted for civil use. Airwork has now converted 14 Kiowas previously operated by the Canadian Armed Forces with another three believed to be on their way to Australia. This leaves only two unaccounted for from the large batch that was retired from Canadian service some years ago and bought by an American sales agent.

Corporate Aviation Services has taken delivery of four more Liberty XL2s to add to its large training fleet at Bankstown and with two more listed for the Kestrel Aviation College at Geelong the type is proving very popular indeed with local flying schools. The Liberty demonstrator, LXL, arrived during February last year with the first customer aircraft delivered in January this year. Since then six have gone to Corporate Aviation, two to Kestrel Aviation and one to a private pilot. Liberty Aircraft Australia has retained two, and four more, not yet registered, are known to be in Australia or on their way.

Three aircraft are Returning to the Register this issue including Robinson R44 Raven ZDP after a mid air collision four months ago.

The helicopter was reported in the May listing as being “withdrawn from use”, but since then further details have surfaced about the reason for the de-registration. The Robinson was part of a feral goat culling operation in the Kennedy Range National Park, approximately 54km NNW of Gascoyne Junction in Western Australia, which involved a Piper Super Cub, OUS, and the Raven. The Super Cub was being used to spot feral goats and had a pilot and observer on board while the Robinson had a pilot and a shooter on board.

Both aircraft were operating at around 300ft above the ground when the rotors of the helicopters tangled with the right wing of the Super Cub. Unfortunately the wing detached from OUS and both occupants died when that aircraft crashed to the ground.

Only minor damage was sustained by the Robinson and the pilot was able to maintain control and hover taxied to the wreck of the Super Cub to try and render assistance.

With minor damage to the rotors it was a surprise that ZDP was de-registered, but, repairs have now been completed and the helicopter is back in the air with Helidoc at Fitzroy Crossing.

Interestingly the two other aircraft returning to the register, Beech Queen Air Commuter FWG and Lancair SLK, were revoked on the same day during August 2006 and are back on the register within a week of each other. The Lancair has had an engine upgrade whilst off the register and is now powered by a 180hp (135kW) engine rather than the earlier 160hp (120kW) unit.

In a tragic coincidence we have to report another mid air collision listed in the Deletions section. Two Air Tractors, ATB and CJK, both based at Wee Waa, NSW, were involved in crop spraying operations north of the town – but over different properties, when they collided at low altitude resulting in the death of one pilot and serious injuries to the other. It is believed that one aircraft was transiting the area while the second aircraft was pulling up at the end of a spray run.

Exports account for five deleted aircraft including MD 520 Notar NTR which is now active in New Zealand as ZK-HZG. It has joined the Wanganui Aero Work fleet which is based on the North Island and is one of the largest and oldest aerial agricultural companies in New Zealand being established during 1950 and operating almost 20 fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The two Eastern Australia Airlines Dash 8s, TQF and TQP, were officially listed as being exported to PNG, however, they appear in the New Allocations as QQI and QQH under the Skytrans Regional banner so logic would dictate that they will move north to PNG soon.

Qantas Boeing 747-300 EBU and Aerospatiale Twin Squirrel RLY are two of four aircraft shown as “withdrawn from use”. The Twin Squirrel is not an old helicopter so no doubt will return to the register shortly, but EBU, one of only six Boeing 747-338s delivered to Qantas between 1984 and 1987, has been stored at Avalon – minus engines – for some years and seems set for the big chop.

Finally, Croatia is not the easiest of places to obtain information from but thanks to the internet and a persistent Englishman we now know that Cessna 182E Skylane DBT is now flying in that country marked as OM-DBT with Mr M Glesk. The 46 year old Skylane has been mostly used as a parachute jumping platform since the 1980s. It was cancelled during September 2007 and was shown in the December deletions section.
