Register Review

We’ve a very ordinary New Allocations section this issue with no new types listed, although there are three new sub-types – EJC is the first Jabiru powered Brumby, JPU is the first Jabiru SP-500 on the CASA register and XWS is the first Rolladen-Schneider LS-6 glider fitted with an 18m wing to join the register.

The German built Rolladen-Schneider LS-6 first flew during 1983 and placed first and second in the 1985 World Gliding Championships at Rieti, Italy, and took out the first three places at the 1987 event at Benalla, Victoria. The allcomposite sailplane is a single seater with a T-tail and the original LS-6 was fitted with a 15m wing. Later versions used wingtip extensions to increase the wingspan to 17. 5m and later 18m. XWS is the first LS-6 in Australian with the 18m wing extensions although there are several LS-6-18s flying in New Zealand in this configuration.

There are more than a dozen Jabiru SP-500s on the RA-Aus register but JPU is the first of its type on the CASA register. The SP model is designed for amateur construction from a kit supplied by Jabiru from its Bundaberg factory. It features two side-by-side seats and is made up of Jabiru’s standard ‘long’ fuselage and ‘short’ wing and can be fitted with either the Jabiru 2200cc four-cylinder or 3300cc six-cylinder engine.

Earlier SP models were restricted to 470kg MTOW, however, for the SP-500, as the designation implies, this has been increased to 500kg.

Glenample Air Robinson R44 Ravens ZVA, ZVB, ZVC and ZVD are for a new venture offering charter and scenic flights over The Twelve Apostles and along the Great Ocean Road to the west of Melbourne. Glenample Air, which will be operating under the name of Edge Helicopters, is based at the Glenample Homestead but will be using landing pads at the Twelve Apostles car park for maximum exposure.

Genample was the original sheep and cattle grazing property in the area dating back to the early 1800s and was instrumental in the survival of two passengers from the sailing ship Loch Ard which ran aground off the south west edge of the property during 1878. The ship was only days away from completing its voyage from England to Melbourne when it smashed into the sheer cliffs with the loss of 52 lives. The homestead has provided home-stay type accommodation for a number of years and has now added scenic flights to the many tourist attractions in the area. At the time of writing the four yellow Robinsons were in storage awaiting delivery to Glenample Air, which planned a December 1 start date.

Two more Cirruses have been added to the register, TCQ and HQQ. TCQ is the first of several for Flight Training Adelaide and arrived in a box at Archerfield during October. All the new Australian Cirruses arrive crated now and are assembled and test flown by Cirrus Aircraft Maintenance at Archerfield, and while TCQ was noted recently out in the sun being prepared for delivery to Parafield, the second Cirrus for Flight Training Adelaide, TCU, was being assembled in the hangar. Cirrus Aircraft Maintenance has a full order book for Cirrus during 2008 with deliveries to China, Malaysia and Thailand predicted to soar during late 2008 and beyond.

HQQ has arrived from New Zealand where it was the second Cirrus to carry the registration ZK-VET and, not surprisingly, both aircraft were owned by a veterinary clinic. The first ZK‑VET was delivered new to Equine Veterinary at Takaka during November 2004 and when the company upgraded to a later model Cirrus in January 2007 the ‘old’ ZK-VET became ZK-SRT and the ‘new’ aircraft became ZKVET.

Interestingly the ‘old’ ZK‑VET also came to Australia during May last year and is now flying as DRK.

There are now 68 Cirrus aircraft active in Australia, with another six new aircraft known to be arriving during the first few months of 2008 and a used example, N6184B (to become CPZ), on its way by air from the UK.

Three aircraft are Returning to Register this month. Cessna 206 Stationair MGK is back on the register having been repaired after an accident and Robin NXY has been restored after spending some time in Malaysia with the Johor Flying Club.

Skydrifer’s Kavanagh balloon, SBQ, has only spent three weeks off the register and is now back offering scenic flights over the Glasshouse Mountains and other landmarks on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Sadly seven aircraft are listed in the Deletions section due to accidents with the demise of Robinson Beta HCN at Doongan Station probably the most thought provoking.

The aircraft was conducting a stock survey flight around the property when the passenger warned the pilot of a strong burning smell. The helicopter landed close to a road and both men inspected the machine finding nothing amiss. The pilot decided to fly the helicopter back to the station’s landing ground but the passenger elected to walk back – a decision that almost certainly saved his life.

After walking about 11km the passenger came across the flaming wreckage of the helicopter and the deceased pilot. The post-impact fire also started a bush fire which continued for several days.

Of the exports Cessna Agtruck MXO and Bell 407 VDW are now active in PNG and four aircraft have crossed the Tasman to begin new lives in New Zealand. Fletcher CYM is now back in its homeland and will, presumably, take up its previous markings of ZK-CYM, while David Jukes has moved from Elwood, Vic, to Wellington, New Zealand, and taken his Cherokee Archer TDJ with him. A quick dab with a paint brush and the Archer is now flying as ZK-TDJ.

The delivery of two new Boeing 737s, VUM and VUN, to Virgin Blue has allowed the airline to move two of its earlier models, VUB and VUD, to its kiwi associate Pacific Blue and these have become ZK-PBJ and ZKPBG respectively.

Following up on the deletion of Rutan VariEze EZC, shown in the November issue, although the official reason for de-registration was “Withdrawn from use and scrapped” it is now known that the aircraft is currently flying under the RA-Aus regulations as 19‑5191. o
