Register Review

Four new types appear in the New Allocations section this month, ranging from the amateur built RJF2 to the Beech Premier business jet.

Although not considered a success the design of the Beech Starship twin turboprop gave the company the technology to develop a completely new range of business jets based on an all composite fuselage construction. The result was the Beech 390 Premier which first appeared during 2001 with seating for six passengers and powered by a pair of Williams FJ44-2A turbofans.

Sydney Jet Charter’s VHP is a Premier 1A model with improved interior and increased headroom and equipped with an IFIS-5000 flight information system and a Proline 21 avionics package.

Bob Francis’s RJF2 is a self designed and built two-seat high winged aircraft somewhat similar looking to a CFM Shadow. The machine is powered by a 100hp (75kW) Subaru EA81 TC engine driving a Bolly two-blade pusher propeller through an Amax re-drive. The wings are of fibreglass foam construction with plywood ribs and a 40 litre fuel tank is housed in each wing with a 20 litre reserve tank within the fuselage.

The aircraft has taken around six years to design and build and is expected to make its maiden flight before Christmas. Although not an aeronautical engineer, Bob is a qualified mechanical engineer and his first design, the RJF1 trike, is still flying under a conventional sailplane wing.

Islander BWO arrived in Australia during April carrying one of the rarest registration prefixes in the world. It was the only aircraft registered to the tiny Pacific island of Palauand was not often seen outside that country. The Islander was built as a kit at Gosselies, Belgium, but was not sold so was delivered to the Brittan-Norman facility at Bembridge, Isle of Wight, UK, for storage between 1979 and 1989.

It was eventually sold to the Philippines and was assembled by the Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation (PADC) at Manila for LBC Airways and registered RP-C688 in 1990.

After use by LBC Airways, Air Ads and Chemtrad Aviation, all Manila based companies, it went to Belau Air of Palau during 2003.

Production of the New Zealand Pacific Aerospace PAC 750XL has now reached 135 with the aircraft finding ready markets in the parachuting, aerial survey and utility areas worldwide. EAJ is the fourth 750XL to come to Australia and was fitted out with digital camera equipment at Bankstown for Australian Aerial Surveys. Australian Aerial Surveys presently uses three Cessna twins but these are, in some cases, considered too fast for the work whereas the 750XL has been found ideal for the task.

Six aircraft are Returning to the Register this issue with the most interesting being Elaine Dunne’s Tiger Moth BXX. The aircraft was built by De Havilland at Mascot during 1941 and was delivered to Richmond during May of that year to join the RAAF as A17-358. After serving with the Empire Flying Training School at Parafield and Western Junction, and surviving two minor crashes, it was sold to Geelong Airways in May 1956 and joined the civil register as ATA. It was changed to BTA during May 1949 and then to RAB two years later when it was obtained by Robby’s Aircraft at Parafield. Robby’s Of the 25 aircraft listed in the Deletions section this month almost half have changed markings and therefore can be found in the new allocations listing under their new registrations. A further seven aircraft have been exported, Gippsland Airvan BSZ to Lithuania; Seneca COT, Tomahawk NRH and Squirrel XTX to New Zealand; and Cirrus LZY, Learjet VVI and Bonanza XSG to the US.

The Seneca is now flying as ZK-XYZ with Rick Lucas Helicopters of Palmerston North, New Zealand, while the Learjet 45 and Bonanza are registered to the Wells Fargo Bank at Salt Lake City, Utah. The Bonanza is active as N2672 with the Learjet 45 taking up the very appropriate markings N45AU.

Cirrus SR22 LZY is believed to have been a resident in Singapore since 2002 and may well still be based there, but is now registered N225LZ.

Hot air balloons AUI, AYB and YSH have been converted the Tiger to an aerial sprayer, a role in which it continued for the next 14 years, firstly with New England Airspread at Walcha and later with Air Spray at Archerfield and Cropair at Runcorn, Queensland. It changed to BXX, its fourth civil marking, during August 1957 and eventually crashed at Kingaroy on July 21 1965.

Gary and Elaine Dunne now have the remains of the aircraft and it has become a long term rebuild project.

Unfortunately the historic Tiger is fairly low on a long list of rebuild projects so it may be some time before it flies again.

John Williams’s Piper Cub RBE was cancelled during April on transfer to the RA‑Aus register but is now back on the CASA register.

Gliders GBZ and GRR along with Super Cub RTM have been restored to the register after being revoked by the authorities last year when the paperwork was not completed to transfer the aircraft to Part 47 requirements.

withdrawn from use after their envelopes have reached the end of their useful life, and one of the first Rutan VariEzes to fly in Australia, EZC, has been scrapped and sold for spare parts.

PA-28 Archer NRB has been damaged and the remains have recently been noted with Aviation Salvage at Bankstown.

The appearance of Twin Pioneer AIS in the Changes of Owner section seems to be a paperwork exercise only as the aircraft is expected to go to Aviation Heritage, a division of Air Atlantique, in Coventry, UK, as predicted in last month’s column.

Ian Kearsley has obtained the rare Fairchild Ranger ABZ from Guy Kendall, leaving only the wreck of Ryan DBD in Guy’s hangar at Caboolture, Queensland.

ABZ is one of only two Fairchild 24R Rangers still flying in Australia, although four of the Warner Super Scarab engined Fairchild 24W Arguses still grace our skies. The first Fairchild 24 Ranger flew during 1935 and over the next four years improvements were made to brakes, landing gear, cabin interior and tail wheel with the final model being the 24R-9 introduced during 1939. ABZ first came to Australia during 1938 and was impressed into RAAF service between 1941 and 1946 for communications and liason duties, flying as A36‑2.
