In Australian Service — Boeing 727 Part 2

Part 2

The culmination of both Ansett-ANA and TAA’s investigations for a jet airliner was the placement of an initial order for two 727-100s each. Approval for the order was received on November 19, 1962, with the intention of an introduction into service on July 1, 1964. Despite Government approval, there were discussions for several weeks until the contracts were signed. The delays arose through Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) requirements for the 727 advised to both operators—an upper limit of a 109 passenger load in an all-economy configuration, the installation of 12g instead of 9g seats, and a request that the seats should be rearward facing.

The cost of the Australian 727s was already escalating. Although a unit cost of £1,958,000 was quoted in the House of Representatives on November 15, the airlines noted that changes to the standard 727 would be costly. TAA estimated that its fully equipped 727, including for example HF navigation aids required in Australia, would push the final cost over £2,400,000. US operators, for example, did not have a standard requirement for HF communications equipment. In Australia, the long-haul routes made the need for such equipment a necessity. The cost of the built-in aerial alone amounted to £20,000 per aircraft. Other additional equipment items ordered for the Australian 727s were storm warning and mapping radar. Ansett-ANA selected RCA X-band equipment similar to that fitted to their Vickers Viscount 800 Series, while TAA specified Ekco equipment.
