The Defence Minister, Mr Kim Beazley, announced on May 1 that an order valued at $471.6 million had been placed for 14 Sikorsky S-70A-9 Black Hawks for the RAAF and an additional eight S-70B-2 Seahawks for the RAN. The Seahawks will be placed on the RAN’s new FFG-7 class guided missile frigates. Current plans envisage a total of 48 Black Hawks for the RAAF.

The first mobile arresting system to be delivered to the US Air Force in Europe has been delivered at Ramstein Air Base. The system can be set up in less than 40 minutes and is able to arrest aircraft such as A-7, F-4, F-15 or F-16 within 300m (1000ft) of touchdown.
