13th Annual Major Airline Directory

Ansett Australia and Qantas, the two major players in the airline scene in our region, both achieved significant milestones in their histories during the period under review. Qantas celebrated its 75th birthday on November 16 while Ansett Australia celebrated its 60th birthday on February 17.

Over the last few years we have seen a reduction in the number of airlines in our directory however this year we are delighted to see the inclusion of no fewer than eight new operators. The most interesting of these are the two New Zealand based low cost trans-Tasman operators Kiwi Travel International Airlines and Freedom Air International. Kiwi International is certainly to be congratulated in opening up a whole new market to the travelling public. A market we might add that previously had been sadly neglected by the major trans-Tasman operators in Air New Zealand and Qantas. The third new scheduled international passenger operator in our directory is National Jet who believe they have identified a need for a direct airline service from NW Australia to Indonesia and Singapore. Freight operators Air Cargo Australia and Pacific Air Freighters also appear for the first time and who would have thought that in 1996 we would be listing an operator whose frontline equipment for freight services to the islands of the South Pacific would be a Douglas DC-4. Finally Air Marshall Islands, Air New Zealand Link/Air Nelson and Air New Zealand Link/Eagle Airways have been included to give a better all round coverage of airlines in our region.
