AirServices computer modelling suggests that if KSA was used to its full capability as a three runway airport using typical international practices that it would be able to operate up to a maximum of 110 movements an hour. (FAC)

Cyberspace Airport and Airways Design

Using Cyberairspace to Design Airports and Airways

In the good old days, it was easy to design an airport.

Find a flat piece of ground near the city, level the surface and plant some grass, erect a basic hangar or two and you were in business. Airways? Well, with only a few aircraft flying and then mostly by day and in clear weather, the ‘big sky’ theory and low rates of closure meant that you could fly safely anywhere, any time as long as you kept a bit of a look outside the cockpit.

How times have changed. Now the price of airport real estate is comparable with a significant part of the national debt, jumbo jets land frequently and disgorge hundreds of people through Customs, Immigration, luggage collection and transportation queues, maintenance is complex, support services extensive. Once in the air, the ‘big sky’ becomes very small, as jets rush toward each other in the dark or through clouds at many kilometres per minute, making visual avoidance impossible. Worse yet, there is now a huge mix of aircraft, and the airways must accommodate fast jets threading up, down and past slower turboprop and piston traffic.
