Kiwi Airlines Boeing 757 Enters Service
Kiwi Travel International Airlines took delivery of Boeing 757-2Y0 G-OOOU at its Hamilton base on November 21 after the aircraft ferried in from Manchester via Calgary and Honolulu.
The Boeing 757 has been wet leased from Air 2000 in the UK and is fitted in a 233 economy class configuration. Kiwi introduced the Boeing 757 into service on November 24 when it operated a charter flight from Hamilton to Sydney and return. The first scheduled service flown by G-OOOU was on November 25 when the aircraft operated the scheduled KC19/20 from Hamilton to Sydney and return. In early November Kiwi was allocated the IATA code KC and this replaced the KI which it initially used. Kiwi plans to commence services on the Sydney to Dunedin route from February 2. Kiwi Airlines’ Boeing 727-225(A) N805EA was damaged at Sydney Airport on October 18 after two tyres on the right hand main landing gear burst on landing. On October 21 N805EA was ferried to Avalon where further repairs were carried out. While the Boeing 727 was off the line Kiwi leased Boeing 737-417 C2-RN10 from Air Nauru with the aircraft operating three trans-Tasman flights. Freedom Air International, a subsidiary of the Mount Cook Airline (itself a subsidiary of Air New Zealand), planned to commence trans-Tasman operations on December 8. Freedom Air will operate over the Kiwi Airlines routes of Hamilton to Sydney, Hamilton to Brisbane and Sydney to Dunedin, having leased Boeing 757-200ER G-BYAF from Britannia Airways with the aircraft delivered to Auckland on December 4. New Zealand Transair, a division of Pleasure Tours of Papatoetoe, planned to commence trans-Tasman services by late December. Equipment to be used is an ex-Continental Airlines Boeing 737-200 (refer Airline Affairs).
Ansett Fleet Changes
Ansett Australia took delivery of its third Boeing 747-312 VH-INK at Sydney on November 7 when the aircraft ferried in from Singapore. VH-INK operated its first flight for Ansett Australia on November 11 as AN881 from Sydney to Kansai. On November 9 Kuala Lumpur was added to the Ansett Australia route network with Boeing 747-312 VH-INJ operating the inaugural AN822 from Sydney. On November 11 Taipei came online with Boeing 747-312 VH-INH operating the inaugural AN827 from Sydney. Auckland was also added to the Ansett Australia network from December 18 with the commencement of a twice weekly Boeing 747-312 service from Sydney. Ansett Australia took delivery of its seventh Boeing 767-200 at Melbourne in mid-December. Boeing 767-204ER VH-RML (registered to Ansett on November 9) was purchased from Britannia Airways in the UK. As G-BKPW the Boeing departed Luton, England on November 1 destined for Dothan, Alabama where modification of the aircraft to Ansett Australia standard was carried out by Pemco World Air Services. Ansett reportedly will add an eighth Boeing 767-200 to its fleet in March ’96 with this aircraft presently being operated by a South American airline. Fokker F28-1000 VH-FKD which was withdrawn from Ansett Australia service in April 94 had been reduced to components at Melbourne by late November. The same fate is expected to befall Fokker F28-1000s VH-FKA and VH-FKF which are also in storage in Melbourne. Fokker F28-1000 VH-FKC which was withdrawn from service in Melbourne on October 15 and Fokker F28-3000 VH-EWF are currently being advertised for sale by Ansett Australia. Fokker F28-1000 VH-FKE which is the last of its type in the Ansett fleet was originally planned for retirement in late ’95 however after overhaul in Melbourne during October VH-FKE was returned to service in Western Australia. The retirement date of VH-FKE is now reported to have been extended to mid to late 1996. Fokker F28-3000 VH-EWG is also now expected to remain in service with Ansett into 1996. Ansett New Zealand has purchased from Bombardier two Dash 8-100s aircraft previously operated by Great China Airlines. In turn Bombardier contracted Eastern Australia Airlines to overhaul the aircraft in Tamworth before delivery to Ansett New Zealand. Dash 8 ZK-NEU msn 218 ex B-15207 arrived in Tamworth from Taipei on October 2 and was followed by ZK-NET msn 197 ex B-15205 on October 23. ZK-NEU was planned for delivery to Ansett New Zealand in December and ZK-NET the following February. On entry into service of ZK-NET and ZK-NEU Ansett New Zealand will return to Flight West Airlines its leased Dash 8s ZK-NEV and ZK-NEW. Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services took delivery of Boeing 737-33A 9M-LKY on September 9 with the aircraft being sold the same day to the Kuala Lumpur Country Heights Golf Resort. Boeing 737-33A 9V-TRE was delivered to Ansett Worldwide on October 3 with the aircraft in turn being leased the same day to Silkair. Boeing 737-53A CN-RMU terminated its lease to Royal Air Maroc in December with the aircraft then being leased to Rio-Sul of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
